Brentford (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Pep Guardiola at the news conference:

When I was young, I was never ever a journalist. Top strikers score a lot of goals, don’t criticise, he will shut your mouth. Sooner or later he is there.

He was out for two months, he lost his grandmother, it is not easy for a human being.

We spoke about the moment (missing chances against Chelsea) and I realised this later, but he didn’t say anything about the passing away of his grandmother.

In this type of game like Brentford, you need Erling. Today we could not use Kevin de Bruyne because he had niggles in his hamstring and I didn’t want to take the risk.

On that match thread I saw posts that said Dias, Akanji, Walker, Alvarez and Haaland as not very good and shouldn't be playing at City.

Gave up with the thread.
About 10 minutes before he scored someone said that this was Haaland's last chance, presumably meaning if he didn't score tonight he should be sent out on loan to Wigan.
Surreal.

We were poor but we will get better. We need to get back to our best team/formation asap. The team we saw for 20 minutes against Copenhagen. Walker at wing back is no good. He needs to be at the back clearing up mess. Stones needs to be dropping into midfield and Alvarez needs to be on the bench for the big games.

I found that very frustrating to watch. Yes Brentford packed the defence but given it took us several minutes to actually get the ball over the half way line let alone the edge of the penalty area we actually played into their hands.
The reason liverpool and arsenal don't struggle against defensive minded teams is they move the ball forward faster, teams aren't able to set up with that many behind the ball.
Our best shots from outside the box in the first half came from Stones and Akanji, Dias had a further good shot. Other than that it was a decent effort by Bobb.
Most of our shooting is awful, even in the warm ups we miss.

Not rocket science - as soon as we played two forward, incisive passes we were unleashed and scored.

Rather than Pep sarcastically telling the crowd to ‘calm down’ when we wanted Ederson to play a fast roll out to Foden.

Play fast, get the best out of our instinctive forward players who rely on space, pace and bamboozling the opposition. We had this spell last season then it all clicked into gear around now. Hopefully same again.

Oh and fuck this gameplan off of getting Walker high and wide. Doesn’t work, never will unless he turns into some Cafu reincarnation. If you’re going to stick with it, switch it to the left and let Gomez have a whirl of it.

Brentford are very good at closing all passing lanes and picking out Toney with their hoofs forwards.

They stopped creating after about 25 mins and it was just a matter of patience.

Passing wasn’t great second half, but after we scored, we finally remembered to keep the ball and not force things. Kovacic calmed us down a lot when he came on.

Glad Haaland scored and we’ve beaten Brentford twice. They’re the new Burnley.

Shout out to the Brentford defender that munched on the grass when Haaland went through.

Well that was not exactly a classic but when the opposition sits that deep and we don't have Kev's magic it's always going to be difficult. Having said that, we could've easily been 2-0 up at half-time if Bernardo directed his header better and if Bobb's effort wasn't cleared off the line.

It was almost a carbon copy of the Everton game with both teams frustrating us for 70 minutes until Haaland breaks the deadlock. Even the goal he scored tonight was practically identical to his 2nd vs Everton. The only difference was we couldn't get another one to kill the game off but thankfully it was enough.
