Looks more like a pizza eclipse

I think I get what he's saying.

The surface of the earth is, in fact, a disc. It makes it's way through the universe on the back of 4 giant elephants which, in turn, stand on the back of a giant turtle named A' Tuin.

This was postulated a few years ago by the late, great visionary Sir Terry Pratchett, who serialised his theories in the Holy Scriptures known as the "Discworld Series".

Sorry, Hodge, for ever doubting you.

Which Pratchett appropriated from Hindu myth, I think.

See, doing it again. People ask you something and you either not bother replying or give an answer like that.

Instead you could be engaging people, showing them why you believe what you do. Opening a few minds maybe.
You're talking to someone who unfortunately has opened their mind so much that their brain has fallen out.

Nothing wrong at all with being a free-thinker, most of the best scientists in history were just that, not afraid to challenge established beliefs. The sticking point is that they backed up their claims with hard theories and positive experimental proofs. From what I've seen of the flat earth proponents they mostly come out with negative points such as the water not going downhill etc.

I agree with your train of thought Blue but in order to truly evaluate we have to dig deeper into the myriad of information available. Some of it will be dross and some of it although meticulously balanced and weighed will also be dross.Greater accedemics than me are at work on all the unanswerable questions of the universe but even the finest can still be a million miles away from reality. This is what forges the kindred spirit propelling us ever forward and this is why we achieve as we do because of the wonderfully inquisitive mindset of the homosapien.

Hodge is unique in his own right.I wouldn't be impudent to voice his modus operandi is wrong because that would be narcissistic however I would urge him to look closer at the facts presented in this intriguing thread. That doesn't mean that we are right it just means the evidence presented on here for a rounder earth is more conducive than the evidence presented to the contrary. If this thread has done anything it is to make all of you engage your minds more which is an achievement in itself. What do I think ? I think the earth is round but I defend Hodges inquiring mind to my last breath. It's because of our worlds Hodges that mankind is where it is at today. That's all I want to say and shall be nil by mouth going forward.

So you say we came from something, what. Then a big bang and billions and billions of years later we became a spinning potato flying endlessly through the vacuum of space. Spinning on its axis at over 1100 mph while spinning around the sun over 660000 mph while flying through the galaxy over 1/2 million mph. To me and quite a few other people find this utter shite.

We didn't come from "nothing". We are Stardust.

Are you saying Neil Young is wrong too??? Monty Python and Neil Young? Noooooooo!

I'll go further, despite the seeming futility, but I've got a few minutes to spare...

Space (or rather Spacetime) isn't even flat, it's curved. Mass curves it. We experience that curvature as the force of gravity. The Earth is massive enough to curve space enough so we and the moon fall into the gravity well around it. The bigger the mass, the bigger the curvature/the force of gravity. That's why if we were on a planet with a huge mass we wouldn't be able to move or we'd be crushed if it were massive enough, and it's why when astronauts went to the moon (they did) they were able to jump high in the air and leap large distances, despite wearing spacesuits, because it is less massive.
(I have had the thought that this guy is a rag troll so hopefully this paragraph pleases him)

It's why the sun holds the planets in orbit and why the sun and all the other stars orbit the galactic centre. They are all falling at just the right speed to stay up. Anything that doesn't will either fall towards the centre of gravity of fly off at a tangent before again being captured by another gravity field/well.

Fact 1: no flat-earth theory stands up to scientific examination
Fact 2: the earth is 100% certainly a sphere (well, oblate spheroid in reality).

Let's look at some common arguments proving beyond doubt that the earth is not flat:

1. There is no feasible way to explain our observations of the sun in a flat-earth model. Firstly, the sun would start small, grow larger, and then get smaller again every single day as it passes overhead. In addition, if it travels at a constant speed over the whole disc-shaped earth, it would appear to speed up as it passed overhead then slow down again as it moves away (in the same way, if you watch a fast car drive past, your head turns fastest at its nearest point). Finally, there could be no seasons in the way we observe them - for the sun to make a full circle of the flat-earth in one day, it would have to move faster then further away it got from the us (in winter) as it has a bigger circle to move around.

2. Nobody has ever found the edge. People have circumnavigated the globe, fully crossed both the Arctic and Antarctic and explored pretty much every square inch of the earth, but nobody ever found the edge.

3. Direct intercontinental flights south of the equator would be impossible. Flying from, say, Australia to South Africa would be well beyond the range of a commercial aircraft, yet go an look on Expedia - they happen every day.

4. There are photos of the curvature of the earth from high altitudes, near space, Earth's orbit and outer space. They all show a spherical rotating ball. Every single one. That's a huge conspiracy, and some pretty advanced CGI if it were all faked.

5. The ship-going-over-the-horizon argument, which is demonstrated even better if two people watch it from different heights (such as the bottom and the top of a cliff - the person at the bottom loses sight much earlier than the person at the top).

6. We know exactly what is the structure of the earth from its surface to its core, and can measure (and predict) seismic waves coming from an earthquake one side of the earth using sensors on the opposite side of the globe.

7. The shadow of the Earth during an eclipse is round, every single time. The very fact that there can be lunar eclipses proves that the sun and moon must be on different sides of the Earth, which can only be the case if the Earth is a sphere.
