Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has lined up former Manchester United assistant Brian Kidd for an advisory role for the Citizens.

News of the World is reporting Hughes has sought out Kidd as a liaison between the academy and the first team, a move which could infuriate United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Quitting the Red Devils in 1998 to become Blackburn Rovers manager, Kidd and Ferguson's tumultuous relationship has only recently understood to have thawed.

Hughes played under the duo in United's first Premier League title in 1993 and is keen to bring Kidd in to help the Sky Blues.

Brian Kidd has been credited with streamlining plenty of youth through the ranks at Old Trafford and will undertake a similar role at Manchester City.

Mark Hughes appointing new staff at Manchester City adds credence to the new owner's confidence in the Welsh manager.

his mum owned a chippy at the top of our estate in moston about 30 years ago(egbert street).....saw him regularly....top guy......

A mate of mine now new a few of the city players when Kidd played for us and they all said he was a top guy and as hard as they come, would be good addition to backroom/coaching staff.

Not good enough to be a manager but he's well liked by the players he's coached in his career.

I'd personally have him used on the bench as he's a shit hot tactician.

Is it true that Taggert got rid of Kidd because Kidd wanted to play a target man and Taggert wouldn't ?? I seem to remember the player involved being John Hartson.

Second question - has anybody really got an idea of what his role will be. A bridge between the First team and the Academy seems a pretty flimsy / non - descript role.

that's the real question. all I can relay are the rumoured disagreements between JC's team and MH's. MH wants players to become wholy focused on the first team from around the age of 16, for there to be more emphasis physical preparation, and less technical coaching at that stage. I understand this is in line with the set-ups at Barca and Arsenal. The academy felt this was an unacceptable encroachment, that technical coaching was still important at that age, and that preparation involved of the youth teams was fundamental to the work they did. They obviously can point to the youth cup successes and the number of players they have brought through. As an outsider I know next to nothing about the merits of either side's argument.
