Let's get this right ... Mancini's insistence on playing Balotelli is going to cost him his job. I'm not going to bemoan Balotelli's shortcomings. They're well documented and only the most myopic fan would defend him. Which is why, I for one, find it both puzzling and infuriating that he appears on the team-sheet as often as he does.
I can only surmise that there is an ego issue here. Mourinho described Balotelli as 'unmanageable', but that didn't hinder Mancini's pursuit of him. Is he trying to prove a point? Does he want to be seen as the manager that 'tamed' Balotelli and turned him into a world-class player? Much as it pains me ... he'll never be a world-class player. And Mancini's view on this matter, as well as his 'tinkering' on line-ups, tactics, formations and his sometimes bizarre substitutions is costing us.
We all know that, statistically, our best strike-force is Aguero and Tevez, who, in my opinion, should be starting every game wherever possible. But how often do they? Hardly ever. I'm sorry, but Mancini's "I'm always right" attitude is starting to hamper our success. For a manager whose team are the current PL champions and currently lying 2nd in the league to be deemed by the bookies to be second favourite for the sack (Martin O'Neill is top) speaks volumes. Does he suspect that with Mourinho and Guardiola likely to be looking for work in the summer that his position is under threat? Is this a "If I'm going down I'm taking you with me" situation? It may seem unlikely, but other than complete arrogance, how else can his decisions be justified?
I'd like to emphasise that this is NOT a knee-jerk reaction to today's result, but I'm not sure how much damage he'll do if he's allowed to finish the season. We'll always love you for our first trophy in 35 years and our first PL title, Roberto ... but you're no longer thinking with any rationality. Time to move on ...
Oh ... and take Mario with you.
