Bricking your TV (Firmware)

I got this LG tv, its got a usb slot but I never bothered with it until recently I thought I'll get a USB stick so I can watch some films on it.. but it turns out its for "service only" or something. I've discovered it can be used to play regular avi files etc but you must downgrade the firmware by loading it onto the stick and let the tv detect it.
Would I lose tv channels on freeview?
Has anyone done this? How easy is it to restore if bricked?

you should not have any problems and you will not have to re tune or anything.
