Brighton (A) - Post-Match Thread

Unselfish?

Second half was nothing to do with game management. Potter changed his tactics and went to a diamond formation. Pep admitted he couldn’t get his instructions across to the players during the second half to change it tactically. Difficult during the game he said. Changed when he sent Kev and Mahrez on. Potter got it wrong tactically in the first half, but the sign of a very good manager, that he was able to change it up. Foden and Bernie were superb. Full credit to Jack, was used to be the star in the villa side, but really settled into the team ethic. Did a lot of selfish work yesterday.
Brighton a bit suicidal first half. Will they repeat the high line at Anfield next week? BHA defenders got back very quickly and it is my betting they will do the same tactics with Bissouma and Webster back. They might get the rub of the green next weekend? Still have difficulty finding the net though.

Concerned about Dias'' performance again.

He is making some very poor decisions and isn't half the player on the right side of the two, despite it being his natural position. Looks slower to react and put his team-mates in the shit with dodgy passing at times.

It tells me that while Laporte is not doing much wrong, we look much better when Stones is on the right side.
Blimey

Think you need to forget this one Tolm. Dias has looked fine in recent games and can’t see why you keep pushing the better with stones narrative. I’d argue our build up is much better with Laporte. Having 4 right footed defenders wouldn’t give us great balance at the back?

Our build up is poorer on the right without Stones, which exacerbates Walker's lack of technique and the ball has to then recycle left, because Dias struggles to move it in to midfield and create the triangle.

It's also why Ederson is struggling at times in possession.

Laporte is able to switch a wonderful crossfield pass out to the right, but he doesn't offer anything else better than Dias can on the left from a defensive standpoint.

Dias is quicker and more alert and because he is naturally a right footed player playing on the left, teams have much more of a problem trying to decide which way the ball is coming out when Stones is also the right-sided defender.

It's just the better partnership and balance for the team.

I think Laportes having lapses in concentration all the time.

Really sloppy ball in from the wing back to the keeper that they nearly broke in on.

I don't think his passing is any better than Stones, maybe his cross field balls but his passing into midfield no way.

I'd get him out of the side ASAP and get Stones and Dias back together.

Don't think Pep fancies 4 right footers in his back 4 though.

He's fucked and needs a break. Give him a couple of game off and he'll be purring again.

His mentality says otherwise as he wants to play every match.

Fair enough. All opinions count. I don’t see it myself. I actually think we really miss Laporte’s distribution on the left and we are conceding very few shots defensively. I think Pep will find time to give all 3 of them minutes.

All the time ha ha. We have conceded 4 goals in 9 games. I must be watching a different game. Maybe he is going to become the latest boo boy.

FWIW Dias short pass (5-15Yds) is c 95% with 145 successful from 152 attempts. He dropped 3 of those passes at Brighton. All 3 of Stones, Dias and Laporte were at 95% last season.

Medium passes (15-30 yards) Dias is a monster - he's made more than any other player in the league this season and a v high compeltion rate of 97.9% with 323 succe3sful from 330.

Long passes (more than 30 yards) he's at 83% completion which compares to Stones last season at 85%. However, Dias making a couple of more passes per game more than Stones did last season.

----------------------

Dias is moving the ball forward (progressive passes) 462 yards per game which is less than Laporte at 533 yards per game. Both higher than Stones who was at 370 yards per games last season.

-----------------------------

I know what you mean about the "look" test here and I was surprised at how good Dias appears through the prism of raw numbers. One thing for sure though he is clearly v v good. And reliable. One thing though is the percentages don't take into account the difficulty of the pass. Intuitively Stones is better.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing the stats.

They are in line with what I see: our build-up play is better with Laporte and Dias. It's not a coincidence that our performances at Chelsea and Liverpool were phenomenal for most of the games, a notch above our best performances from last season, given that they came at full grounds this time around. We are pretty good with Stones as well, he will get chances, season is long.

Learnt a bit from reading that post, cheers for the stats.
