Taking it one step further the vibrator. Again, a simple design (power supply, speed control and an unbalanced motor in a plastic/rubber housing) and doesn't require an awful lot of skill to operate effectively.

I know a guy who knows the guy who invented that pop-out thing you stick in the back of your mobile phone to hold it. It was originally meant for runners to keep their headphone cables neat. The feedback he got from his mates was that it was useless at that, but everyone said it was great for holding the phone in one hand.
