Ive only just found out about this and i fell into the category that is affected, ie I made a transaction to BA between 25th Aug and 4th Sept or so.. I have cancelled the card I made the booking with in time as no dodgy transactions have been made on my card. I would strongly advise anyone else affected to do the same..

I'm a bit of a technophobe but find it strange that multi national companies and indeed sovereign governments cannot protect their (Our) data..??

When will these companies learn that security costs money and invest in it?
Note that their shares are down 2.5% today - on a market value of close to £13.5bn that's a drop of more than £300m.
Wonder if the shareholders will vote for a big investment next AGM.

It depends where the breach happened. BA's booking systems are based on the Amadeus GDS, which are partitioned for each airline, and then a secure payment system layered on top of that. Every airline does it the same way - the idea they are using some antiquated system is nonsense, all the airlines share similar systems that are designed for them. There'll be pretty urgent checks being made at every other carrier too.
