Hello. I will probably be ditching my broadband and phone deal with TalkTalk due to them not being being able to deliver the promised speed on Broadband. I think I read that there was somebody on here who works for Virginmedia and could do a good deal on an Anytime calls and upward of 100 mbps on broadband speed.

Please pm me if this is the case.

Before you jump to VM, what speed do you expect? Is it definitely a problem in the area or your router/wifi?

Also speed isn't everything, we manage quite happily on 50 mbps with 4 people streaming, gaming etc all at the same time. Upload speed can also be a factor if working from home, some of those VM packages used to have much slower upload than the Openreach copper/fibre network. I'm not a gamer but apparently the latency is not as good on VM whatever that means, but these things are continually changing.

Finally there is a big upgrade of the Openreach network going on in parts of the country. I only found out because I noticed dozens of their vans on my estate last week. Looks like they're bringing FTTP (fibre to the property/premises rather than FTTC (cabinet)) soon in lots of places. That will allow all the providers (BT, Sky, TalkTalk) to improve their services. If you go to the Openreach website and put your address in it will tell you if FTTP is coming soon.

Hey, I work for virgin media business.
Do you do any work from home at all? If so, I can look after you

Very interesting. Thanks for the info. Just annoyed with them promising a certain speed and not delivering on it. However, I will check the Openreach website and thanks once again for your kind assistance.

The speed you are promised will not necessarily be the speed you get if using wifi, you need to connect directly to your router using an ethernet cable to get the actual speed delivered to your home. I would just be wary of jumping from one provider to another on the promise of speed as each provider has good areas and bad areas. The best bet is to ask your neighbours what speeds they get and who with. Some people pay top whack for the top packages when they don't need it and never speedtest it to see if they get what they pay for because any degraded speed is still enough for their purposes so don't notice.

From what I've heard, though, is Talk Talk are one of the worst for customer service but that crown seems to change hands regularly.

I'm with EE and they've been excellent but if your problem is with the network, even a better router might not fix it.

just signed up with plusnet 'i had heard bad things about them concerning their customer support but seems OK' they were doing a deal for fibre optic at £25 pluss a £75 cashback after 30 days of signing up on a 18 month contract.router is great and spead is good, no problems with them

Inboxed you mate

If you're switching for speed issues on TalkTalk then chances are if you use another ISP that use's BT's infrastructure you may suffer the same speeds (unless they've got their own kit in the exchange).

BT's Broadband Availability checker might give you an insight into what max speeds you can expect - most ISPs provide their own checker too. If your area lacks any FTTC or FTTP (or g.FAst) listings then you'll likely be stuck on xDSL (copper wires rather than fibre).

Sam Knows website is pretty handy too:

In regards to the customer service side of things, I work for an ISP and hear a few derogatory comments about TalkTalk's and Plusnet's Customer Service. BT seem to cop for the most stick.

VM is a good option as they use their own infrastructure and, truth be told, if they were available in my area, then I'd be using them alongside/instead of the (almost free) BB I get through work.
