it would appear I have been locked out of my btinternet.com email address that I have had for donkeys years. When I finally spoke to a human in the call centre they said that as I no longer had broadband with them I would need to set up a premium account for £7.50 a month. All my personal emails go through this account and without it I’m a bit stuck.

Has anyone had any similar issues, and is there a way around it? Don’t want to pay the £7.50 per month and I certainly don’t want somebody in a call centre taking over control of my computer to do whatever he needed to do to activate it!

No way round it unless you return as a BT customer. Get a new email address and send a block email out to all your contacts advising them of the change. Only way to save yourself £7.50 a month.

Is there a fixed term for the premium email? If not, pay it, spend a month migrating everything to a new account, then cancel the premium email account.

Ok, £7.50 but probably less painful than losing it all.

I left BT two years ago and still access my emails!!
They were pretty much threatening me on the phone that I’d have no access and the account would be deleted. I’ve been gone about three years I think but for some reason they blocked me today. Do you still receive emails or can you just see what was already there?

Cheers... my lad suggested that. I think I’ve got 60 days from what I’ve read

Still receive them. Latest one arrived at 7.12 this evening, Monday.

I think your problem might have been if you were still on the BT Yahoo account - they all got migrated over a few years ago, and they were canning the BT Yahoo ones after the hack of Yahoo anyway.

The ones that moved across they seem to have largely left alone.

So basically I’m faced with setting up a new hotmail or gmail account and forwarding all the BT mail to the new address and letting as many people I can know my new email?

I believe that all broadband providers do this apet from sky, i have e mail with them that they let me keep while i wasn't a customer. I don't get my broadband from them.

Buy your own domain name (e.g. gornikdaze.co.uk) and add an email package to that which uses that domain and lets you set up an email address (or multiple ones) such as gornik@gornikdaze.co.uk. Then it's yours as long as you want it, regardless of your ISP. That should cost less than £50 a year, which is half the cost of the BT premium package.
