Apologies. That rule change had passed me by.

Given it only changed this season, away goals in a 2 legged tie isn't exactly an unheard of concept for us. Not sure its relevant whether a domestic or international fixture.

For what its worth, I don't really like the away goals rule.

The League Cup changed recently to be fair but the play offs opted out of it in '99.

The overall point though is that weird play off relegation system, I know Germany aren't alone in using it but it's a ridiculously unfair way to decide things in my opinion. Be shit all year in one league and stay up, be great all year in another and stay down. Away goals just compound it's stupidity.

I guess. Not too dissimilar from finishing 3rd in the Championship to then get beat by the team the finished 6th in the semi finals though.

Its maybe not the case in Germany, but I would imagine the theory behind their method is to try and maintain the strength of the league. Some countries don't have the same strength in depth as England (not including Germany in that), so I think they take the view the teams coming up should be better than the teams going down. Perhaps a bit simplisitic to make them play in a 2 legged game though.

I could quite fancy Bremen for the next trip. Hamburg just over an hour away on the rattler.

@Rhineland I reckon I could get from Bremen to Hamburg and back without a ticket. The train from Frankfurt to Koblenz was the best when I managed to convince the ticket collector that she'd actually already seen my ticket.

Don't count on it. Whatever you did to mesmerize her, your charme might not be working with male ticket collectors.

Unbelievable

-In the last game of the regular season, a 96th minute penalty in another game meant Ingolstadt missed out on auto promotion and went into the playoff v Nuremburg

-They had to play the first leg on 2 days rest while Nuremburg from higher division got 8 days rest.

-Lost promotion on away goals in the 97th minute with the last kick of the 2nd game, having lost the first leg 2-0 and coming back to lead 3-0 in the second leg.

Absolutely brutal.

Might not be a popular view given we have the UK's only Ingolstadt member on the board, but I'm glad Nürnberg won.

Had done a few grounds in Germany with City in Europe, but Nürnberg were the home team for the first Bundesliga game I went to, which became the beginning of an obsession. It snowed and I was freezing cold, but mercifully there was plenty of glühwein available.
