Its back at last!

I don't know how you guys cope during winter. The break is far too long

I do not really mind. During the holidays I do not really miss football. And then there is enough interesting winter sports like e.g. biathlon. And you can always watch the other leagues, too.

Fascinating game tactically by Bayern last night, I thought they were great.

Guardiola played a 3-3-4/3-5-2 with a front four of Coman, Lewandowski, Muller and Costa and the midfield trio of Alonso, Lahm and Thiago behind them. Alonso and Lahm were both excellent, they sat in front of the back 3 and just sprayed passes all over the park. One touch, then a 30/40/50 yard pass into a wide player with ease. The technical ability of their midfield trio was so high, they completely dominated the game from there. The interchanging of positions between Thiago, Lewandowski and Muller in the centre was brilliant too, constantly on the move, Hamburg players couldn't get near them.

Pep seems to be one of the only manager who can play a back 3 at the top level, but it's really effective when he plays it. He did at Barca aswell with either Puyol/Pique/Abidal or Puyol/Busquets/Pique. The fairly narrow back 3 with a high line seems to be very effective under Pep, especially when he's got quick defenders in there (Alaba, Boateng). The back 3 really works when you're dominating possession and the opposition are counter attacking. We basically play with a back 2 in that situation; both full backs go forward and no centre midfielder drops back. Our two centre backs can be completely isolated, that's definitely a big change Pep will make if he comes here.

Wonderful display by Bayern, Pep is a genius.

The speed at which they broke was incredible, and the threat on the flanks was simply too much for a sorry Hamburg. It was interesting to watch Lewandowski drop so deep and then sprint to get back into the box when Bayern attacked; Bony manages one of those bits better than the other...

Not really. Yesterday was the typically tired match we are used after the winter break from Bayern. The problem seems to be that whereas the other teams try to peak early as the need the points from the start, Bayern has to try to peak in March/April/May. That makes some difficult matches at the beginning of the second season half when out of fitness issues they cannot be on 100% (and that shows in the play, too, as they made a lot easy mistakes) - but they should take profit of it later. When there is no big injuries following.

Boateng probably is out for some weeks now, too. And Martinez the only defender without injury issues. You still have to be careful with Badstuber and Benatia never played more than a handful of matches in a row without injuries...

Hamburg pressed early on and made problems with the build-up but kept tight at the back, too.

There is a lot to improve in the next weeks. Was a scraped win - but you need to have those, too.

Just Coman. Costa after his injury still needs to have time. So does Arjen. And Coman still has problems with the end product. But how this 19 year old plays with his defenders and how often he can escape them - and can only be held back with fouls - is absolutely promising.

Especially with his apparent love of life in Munich, and at Sabener Strasse. Promising both on and off the pitch.

Nuff said!

Odd to see so many Leicester City flags at the Bochum game this evening (it was on BT Sport over here). After a quick google search there appears to be a small scale friendship between the supporters so presumably some had made the journey over this evening.

Anyway, I'm all set for my newly extended trip in a couple of weeks - flights, trains, tickets and accommodation all booked.

Fri 19th Feb - St Pauli v FSV Frankfurt
Sat - Hansa Rostock v Aue
Sun - Bielefeld v Paderborn then Hannover v Augsburg
Mon - Fortuna Düsseldorf v Nürnberg
Tue - Fly to Kiev from Dortmund
Wed - Kiev v City
Thu - Fly back to Dortmund (not quite early enough to get to Schalke sadly)

Now staying on until Sunday morning so...
Fri - Paderborn v RB Leipzig
Sat - Bremen v Darmstadt
Sun - Fly to London and watch City (hopefully) beat Liverpool in the Cup Final.

Rostock is my first venture into East Germany, so particularly looking forward to that. I'm ticking off 8 new grounds in all and I'll hopefully witness two City wins along the way. That will take me up to 16 out of the current 18 Bundesliga grounds with just Wolfsburg and Darmstadt to go, and also take me up to 30 different German grounds in total. I had booked to go to Kiev via Dortmund the day we drew them but didn't want to publicise it on this forum in case I had to try and sneak in the ground. Thankfully it wont come to that now. In case our German friends hadn't heard, Kiev are only charging £4.50 for a ticket which means German ticket prices are too expensive as well haha!

You lucky bugger! That looks an absolute belter of a trip, especially like the look of that Hansa game. I need to get over again, but can never do any dates that are decent for a few games.

There are actually a couple of clubs which have connections to English/British teams.

Bochum - Leicster
Gladbach - Liverpool
Frankfurt - Oldham
Hamburg - Glasgow
St. Pauli - Celtic

Thats the ones that come to my mind immediately, might be even more...

Going to the hockey match as well or did you cut this from your schedule? If yes where are you going?

At the St. Pauli match say hello to the members of "Senseless Crew" FSV Frankfurt. Its their "Ultras". Got huge respect for them, they are usually everywhere supporting the team. Not a lot of them, but they stick to their team since they exist, which is not exactly easy in a town like Frankfurt which is dominated by one team.

You've missed the most obvious one of all...

Schanzer - City ;)

I'm sure the others will be fine with it!

I couldn't find one that fit in with my schedule unfortunately but maybe I'm wrong. I thought I'd be able to get one in at Hannover, but they 'face-off' during the 2nd half of the Hannover v Augsburg game which is terrible planning by the Ice Hockey team - surely locals would want to go to both too!

Flying to Dusseldorf on April 8th, and hopefully watching Bochum on the Saturday lunchtime, and then Cologne-Leverkusen on the Sunday.
Can anyone explain, the sudden rise and rise of Hertha Berlin, as Germany is traditionally one of the few countries where teams from the capital, don't normally prosper.
