Don't think this gets mentioned as much as it should Remembering all who sadly passed away in The Burnden Park Disaster on this day in 1946.

THE tragedy that befell 33 souls at Burnden Park on March 9, 1946 is often referred to as the ‘forgotten’ disaster. Coming a year after the destruction of the Second World War – and with public conscious later dominated by the awful events of Hillsborough and Bradford– the crush at Bolton Wanderers’ home ground 70 years ago can sometimes seem overlooked.

Thanks for posting. Would urge anyone with time, and sympathy, and a sense of curiosity for how things change and how they don’t, to read the bloody harrowing official archive report in the article. The testimony of the poor bloody turnstile operators, of the doctors ascribing “cause of death - asphyxia” again and again and again. The civil engineer who inspected the crush barriers that had failed - and the crush barriers that had done what they’d been designed to do and saved hundreds more people from being crushed to death. The saddest thing was the printed addresses of the witnesses, and the home towns of the dead. “Aged 30-odd, from Atherton…” over and over again.

Trotters don’t weaponise this tragedy, which is why anyone whose hearts are too hardened by tribalism to look at the fatal crushes in Sheffield, Brussels and Glasgow, should read this. Don’t wish your ‘match-day experience’ any less safe than it is now.
