Burnley (A) Post Match Thread

Ilkay is, and has been for a while, world class. Many on here didn't appreciate what he does for us until now - wins the ball, outstanding passing game, goes by people, controls the tempo and now scoring goals. This is why Pep signed him - for a bargain price as well. Before he joined us, I remember looking at his stats - outstanding.

This is like one of those urban myths. No referee was ever demoted. Before VAR, the select group of refs would officiate in the PL one week & in the FL the next week. If a ref had had a poor game the press would come out with the "ref has been demoted" BS. Now, in normal times, they will ref 1 week & then be on VAR duties the next.
Pre-Prem, I worked with a guy who could run the line in the top two divisions and ref lower league games - ran the line in those legendary Everton/Sheff Weds FA Cup games - late 80s. He ran the line in a Manure/AC Milan friendly - Gullit and co. Expenses only in those days and you weren't allowed to ref games in your local area. Was forever telling us that the assessor in the stand reviewed the ref's performance with the ref in attendance using video - mistakes were highlighted loud and clear. I don't think that direct analysis of performance happens these days.

Disagree he hasnt been world class for 2 seasons pep moving him to attacking mid has brought out his best attributes.Ive got to admit i never rated him playing central mid as he was constantly getting caught in possesion.but boy in this position he looks like zidane he just oozes class.this teams getting better and better.doesnt seem to matter who drops out the way we manage the ball most teams will struggle against us.Add to that the three centre backs and we are so hard to get behind.Keep it going blues lets finally beat the dippers sunday.

The midfield is so good atm.

I love the idea of KDB returning to be the central fulcrum up front (like when Jesus was out injured) or playing wide (instead of Mahrez). I think he'd contribute to a huge number of goals. All while allowing Bernardo, Gundogan, Rodri and Cancelo to continue to dominate midfield.

I think a rule change (lets face it they make new ones every week!) if a team has low possession <25% and lose they then punished -1 pt - encourage a few to actually make a game of it.
To be fair Burnley I think did, as they did on many occasions press us high. We were just so bloody good at keeping possession. There was one point I thought the fake crowd noise needed an ‘ole’ everytime we touched it

Peps first signing says all .

Upper shirt sleeve (think level with armpit) is not handball, and therefore is to be counted for offside. But it's not like the toe end of a boot - the dividing line between OK and not OK just can't be that precise.

Genuine attempt to play the ball only applies to fouls in the penalty area. If the foul is an attempt to play the ball, it's yellow rather than a red (if it is also when the fouled player is denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity). Last night's madness was two players sent off for trying not to foul a player - if they'd tried to foul the opponent and failed it would only have been yellow.

The only part of the body that doesn't count for offside is hand and arm (below shoulder level).

Great.
Now explain to me why Gabbys goal at Spurs was given as handball then?

Except he wasn't winning the ball or going past people......for far too long he looked unfit, the opposition ran passed him like he wasnt there and he was frightened to put his foot in.

Thankfully, almost miraculously,he has reinvented himself to such a degree that he is a definite contender for POTS.I can't praise him enough for such, just outstanding.

We have to take into account that in the past our midfield had a different mould with David Silva, and Yaya.

Ilkay was good when he first came here, but we didnt want to risk meddling the spine that brought us many trophies and break records. But we can only field 11 players at a time.

Many question how will we fare or evolve without David Silva and only on KdB. Ilkay is the answer.

Great win and a good performance but Sean Dyche doesn't even try to win this fixture anymore. Always has an injury crisis that clears itself up immediately after wards. Just wonder why no one calls him out for his cowardly approach?

The quality of football from Burnley was truly shocking. Every single pass from the goalkeeper and other players was a hoof up the field just giving us the ball back. I really don't rate Dyche and also don't accept the Burnley poverty narrative.
They have been in the PL for years and had a lot of TV revenues in that time. They play terrible football compared to lots of clubs with similar finances in the UK and abroad. Dyche gets the usual easy ride from the press. I am not saying they should be winning trophies but it is about time they showed more ambition and tried to entertain their own fans a bit more. Burnley were an attractive team to watch in the 60s and 70s.
