Another step toward progression...
A win was what most people expected, but, considering our implosion last season, those expectations have dimmed somewhat.
Firstly, I thought Burnley played very well. Based on what I saw, I think they'll avoid relegation this season & will give a few teams a run for their money.
The early own goal was deserved for the pressure we applied & it allowed the game to settle into a pattern of control by City. However, from around 25 minutes onwards we seemed to go off the boil & started making a few silly errors which allowed Burnley to gain a foothold in the game.
They continued to grow in influence, which led to their equaliser with 10 minutes of the first half remaining. We stepped up our response, but so did Burnley & surprisingly the game turned into a basketball match as Burnley also moved up a gear to match us.
We seemed to be running out of ideas & I felt it was City who needed the halftime team talk more.
After the break we came out with more purpose, but again Burnley stepped up their pace to match us. BUT as opposed to last season, this current transitional iteration of Manchester City seem to have rediscovered their lost gears!
Not only did we match Burnley's gear ratio, we moved into overdrive mode which they couldn't match, & more importantly, we looked like we had more overdrive gears to select if needed. I honestly can't remember the last time I was able to say that!
A Haaland layoff & a Nunes 6 yard box volley gave us a deserved lead against tiring opposition. ANOTHER own goal put clear Sky Blue water between the two teams, albeit Burnley still looked dangerous on the break.
Haaland added two late goals to seal the points & give us a 5-1 victory, albeit he should've had 5 in truth. To be honest, this didn't feel like a dominant 5-1 victory of old. We used to score that many against teams who never left their own half.
Our defence looked solid with good performances throughout. Donnarumma made a couple of exceptional saves at crucial points in the game to limit Burnley to the one deflected goal, but his command of our area has evidently lifted the confidence of the whole team.
Nico G had a brainfart 5 minutes during which Burnley scored, but the more I see of him & his developing style of play, the more he (dare I say it) reminds me of Rodri in his early City career, which bodes well.
Reijnders was steady. He was better than his poor performances against Spuds & Brighton, but he's still nowhere near the player we saw at the CWC & against Wolves. It's early days, so he has time to improve. Perhaps a couple of games coming on from the bench might be best for him.
Foden was giving the ball away left right & centre during the early exchanges, but from midway in the first half until the whistle blew, he dominated the game from the centre & kept popping up in both boxes. He's taking responsibility & beginning to show true leadership qualities.
Haaland had 5 clear goal-scoring opportunities & took two. The fear factor we once held over other teams has evaporated to be replaced by a respect for what we're capable of.
This means teams are more willing to attack us, which means we can play to Haaland's strength of latching onto through-balls & running in behind defences when we counter-attack.
It was good to see Savinho get some minutes & showing flashes of him getting back to form.
However, the star of the show was again Jeremy Doku! With teams being more willing to attack us, it gives Doku more space to attack the defence at pace on the counter. Toward the end of the first half he was becoming isolated again, facing 3-4 defenders.
In the second half, it was noticeable that O'Reilly moved out to the left in support of Doku, which meant Burnley couldn't predict whether we'd attack down the wing or come inside, & this is what ultimately undid the opposition.
It was a good, solid win & gives us further confidence that we're evolving nicely & progressing as a result. Are City back? I'd say there are signs we're on our way back, but that we've still got a distance to go yet.
Roll on Monaco & Brentford!
