I am 99% sure. VAR advise the ref. That said, if the ref is unsure if something he may be able to ask

Eg - I watched a game in Germany, ball came into the box, was cleared and play carried on as normal. A few seconds later VAR adviser the ref the ball was cleared by a handball. Ref looked at the screen, confirmed and a pen was given

I know what you mean as I've seen that happen in Bundesliga matches but the applications seems to be a bit different there than everywhere else. When VAR was used in the league cup in England (or in La Liga in Spain), the referee never got the option to look at a pitch-side monitor. He just stopped the action while waiting for the decision from the VAR team.

For the Bundesliga matches, it seemed to be used as an auxiliary tool while letting the referee make the final decision himself after looking at the monitor. In the other domestic leagues, the referee isn't making the decision; he's being told the decision over his mic.

I'm not sure what that changes in terms of which of the referee and VAR makes the decision to have a closer look at an incident.

What you're saying makes sense, though, in my opinion.

What's the story with Bernardo? Reading conflicting reports on whether he's injured or not.

I thought it was the referee who decides when to consult VAR if he's unsure? If what you're saying is right, then my understanding of how VAR works has been wrong.

I've always thought it was used at the discretion of the official on the pitch rather than those looking at the monitors.

Are you sure about that? The reason I am under the impression that it's up the referee is that there have already been complaints in Spain about VAR not being consulted when necessary because certain referees didn't ask for it when a situation was deemed necessary. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have both issued complaints already.
My understanding is that the ref can be informed of certain things if he missed them - penalties, wrong person ID and I think there is one more - someone will know. The ref can at anytime also ask to use VAR and then trot to the TV to look over things

Thanks. If that's the case, then both the VAR team and the referee have the option of initiating a VAR review. Ideally, that SHOULD mean there's a higher chance of catching an infraction.

Thats correct, though when the premier league are trialling this season on of the things they are looking at is whether the VAR team tell the refereee to check on the screen or make a decision themselves. I think the reason being if VAR give the decision it will be much quicker than the referee going and checking, especially if its only used for clear and obvious errors, not subjective ones when the original decision will stand.

My prediction is 2-0 City. Burnley will be very defensive and after an international break it might take until the 2nd half to get going.

Probably the usual, whatever starting 11 we put out. Burnley defending deep, Hart in great form and that will last up until we are able to lead 2-0.

Good to see Hart back, but sentiments aside it’s three points. If we win Hart can have as good a game as any for us.

Really looking forward to this, feels like ages since we had a home game.
