So my 11 year old lad starts senior school in September and most of his mates now have phones. I was trying not to give in but on holiday last week he met a girl and she pulled out a Blackberry and asked for his number. The look of terror on his eyes through not having a phone was painful to watch! I've decided that he can have one for Christmas when he will have been in school a few months and will have a whole new number of friends who will most likely have phones too. So, my question to the mums and dads on here who have bought phones for their kids' is, what type of tarrif have you got? Do you have contracts for your kids' phones or do you top up instead of spends for them? Looked at the usual suspects, 02, carphone warehouse etc, but I can't find anything which is suitable. I know my lad will use the internet on it, so it will be a 'smart phone', but i'm wondering on the upkeep of it to be honest......

Cheers Blues.

Got my daughter a cheap touch screen thingy for her 11th birthday a few weeks ago. Its an Orange pay as you go on the Dolphin tariff. She gets free internet on it and 300 texts as long as £10 a month is put on it, which then obviously gives her £10 credit every month as well. The call prices aren't too bad either, 20p a minute and when she runs out of the free texts it is 10p each.
I shopped around for a bit trying to get the best deal on a PAYG and that was the best one I found for what she needed for it.

there are loads of deals out there like this one

<a class="postlink" href="http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/catalog/extrasList.jsp?dependantSkuIds=sku2280040,sku2900037&phoneType=post&skuType=consumerPostpayVoicePlanSku&selection=phoneSku&initialFilters=flt_paymonthly&_requestid=1566544" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/catalog ... id=1566544</a>

100mins talk time. 500 texts and internet.

remember to haggle a bit before you buy. i reckon you could get this for a tenner a month

I'm down with the kids, Pidgey lad, I'll steer you right!

My 8 year old nephew has just got a little cheap Motorola phone. We spoke to all of his mates's parents and all kind of agreed to get the kids a £20 phone each, but put them all on O2.
On O2, if you top-up £15 in one month, you get unlimited free texts to another O2 mobile, unlimited free calls to an O2 mobile, plus you get a code to use for this free game on the internet that gives you more gifts.

Mobile internet is expensive, but I don't fucking want a 8 year old kid to have constant and unsupervised access to the internet, so that's a plus more than anything.

So, the result is that all of the kids on the street now have a phone each that they use to text and call each other for free, taking advantage of the fact that they are all on O2.

Orange have a built in censor and its good to and works. you have to go into the orange shop with i.d to have it removed, even if your bloody 40 year old

Im in a similar situation...Daughter just turning 13 and she wants/needs a new phone.

Shes had a PAYG for the last year and i considered a contract...but thats just not happening. Definitely gonna stick with PAYG as i believe it will help her manage it and money for herself.

The wife and i are on O2, as i think most of her friends are...also i received a text from O2 telling me about a new Simplicity deal on PAYG....£5
