By-election in Hartlepool

An interesting poll on Keith coming up.

Will the Tories go for to he same jingoistic bollocks that won them seats up there last time and how will whoever he parachutes into the seat counter it?

Wasn't Angus the Monkey elected as Mayor for Hartlepool a few years ago.
And Hartlepool United have him as their mascot I think.
All I remember was the folk story that during the Napoleonic wars the town thought a monkey was a french sailor who had been shipwrecked so they hanged it.

Why do I feel that Keith will put Eddie Izzard to run there?

I once was working up in Hartlepool, and was chatting to the accountant over lunch. I said that I'd been told by the group FD not to mention the monkey (I already knew the story), and she said that the usual reply was "why, have you lost a relative?"

Make or break for Starmer

I think a lot depends on if Party hierarchy overrule the CLP.
If they do (like in the Liverpool Mayoral election process), I could see an "independent left" candidate standing with the backing of the Socialist party etc.
If the CLP are "allowed" to select a local activist, then they should get elected regardless of Starmer

I'm not sure this is a make or break for Starmer. I think the tories will win it quite comfortably as it's the kind of place they have been going after very hard, (white working class). Its the kind of place that didn't vote for Corbyn and did vote for brexit (70% for leave in the EU referendum) and the brexit party got 20% in the last GE. Its as brexity as it gets and without the brexit party standing this is the kind of seat that Johnson is all about. In fact i would think he would get more votes here than he would in his own constituency. It will also time well with vaccines and the end of lockdown so I just dont see Labour winning.
