By-election in Hartlepool

If opposition parties are not winning by-elections this far into a term of Government then they are in serious trouble.

By convention the PM and LOTO do not visit the constituency, it will be telling if either does. If one does it is a sure sign they are in trouble. You can also measure who is doing well by the amount of party "big wigs" who visit. The kissing babies stuff etc.

I expect both main parties to playdown there chance of winning and get their respective excuses in early so that any victory can be claimed as an even better win than they expected.

Personally I am in a strange position, i hate this government with a passion, but a win for Starmer would play into the hands of the liberal left/centrists who would then claim they are on the right track to election victory which is pie in the sky.

The NIP (Northern Independence Party) are standing, they are a Secessionist Democratic Socialist party , I would vote for them in a heartbeat.

There is a story - probably apocryphal - of when Mandelson was the incumbent there and he attended an event at the Hartlepool Labour Club where they had a pie and peas night. On being given his Mandelson saw the mushy peas and said

"ah - guacamole"
