A doctor threatened to kill his estranged wife after she accidentally sent him a text message intended for her lover, a court heard yesterday.
Nurse Victoria Stacey wrote a message for a family friend with whom she was having an affair, which read: 'How about another weekend in the Marriott Hotel in Birmingham?'
But the court heard that because she was unfamiliar with her new mobile phone, she accidentally sent it to her husband, hospital consultant Dr Simon Stacey, 39, instead of her lover.
Mrs Stacey said that after her husband received the text message, he telephoned her to say 'he was going to come down and kill me at work'.
The mother of two admitted to the affair with a friend's husband, Steve Sharrot, while giving evidence at Stacey's trial for assault at Bolton Crown Court.
'I sent that message in error because I had just got a new mobile phone,' she told the court. 'Is it wrong to have a relationship when you are separated from your husband?'
She said she had embarked on the affair after her husband moved out of the family home.
She had allegedly suffered years of abuse by Stacey.
The doctor denies one count of assault causing actual bodily harm after allegedly beating his wife with a shoe, leaving her in fear for her life.
The jury heard the assault was just one of many incidents of violence during the couple's turbulent marriage.
Stacey was said to have a bad temper and would snap either after he had been drinking or for no reason at all.
His alleged attacks included smacking his wife's head against a lavatory bowl and hitting her with a pole while she lay asleep in bed.
n one alleged incident in August 2006, Mrs Stacey said her husband ripped a lamp off the wall and threw it at her with such force that she fell to the floor.
The final attack is said to have happened in March 2009 when Stacey, a consultant physician at the Royal Bolton Hospital, allegedly beat his wife with a training shoe as she lay curled in a ball in their daughter's room.
The couple met in 1995 while they were working – he as a trainee doctor and she as a nurse – at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
They moved in together, but within a year there were problems in the 'troubled relationship', although they went on to marry in 2000 and have two daughters.
The jury heard Mrs Stacey eventually went to the police in March 2010 – after her five-month affair had ended – and told them about her alleged abusive marriage.
She said she had reported her husband because 'enough was enough' and she was scared for herself and her children.
Mrs Stacey said: 'I took my marital vows and I was serious about them. But my husband beat me on several occasions.
'He told me he would change – he promised me he wouldn't do it again. He was a control freak. He liked everything so perfect.'
She denied ever attacking Stacey and when it was put to her that she punched him after he dropped her and her children at a barbecue, she claimed she had struggled with him because he was trying to drive off and their daughters were in the way
'The children were on the pavement and he tried to run the children down,' she said through tears. 'What man tries to run their children down?'
