Captain for next season | Bernardo confirmed (pg11)

Probably worth noting that Dias, Rodri and Erl all have work to do next season on their own game to get back to their levels for various reasons. Bernardo is the one out of the 4 who can probably afford the "distraction" of being the captain despite his form last year. Add in he's undoubtedly well liked in the dressing room, understands the club and fans as well as anybody in the team and always gives it his all, it makes a lot of sense to me.

Bernie I love you but can you stop talking about when you want to leave? It's like it's 2pm on the clock and you're dying for those last 3hrs to run down so you can just clock out and head home. Ffs talk about the coming season and what you would like to see the team do differently or just put out the generic "tough captain" talk, Chatgpt can probably generate one for you in a matter of seconds but for the love of God, enough with the "I'm leaving soon" talk

Great choice by Pep. Bernardo is the example to them all. Never shirks responsibility, turns up in the big games, does all the donkey work, constantly available and is the first one to put in a dirty tackle just to stir it up when we need a bit of fight injected into the side all whilst never losing his cool himself. I can't find a fault in this decision. Dias and rodri are the natural leaders and haaland is the future, already a massive presence, he'll lead all the new guys over the next decade.

We seem to have developed a pattern since Kompany left whereby our captain doesn’t stick around. Silva had one season then left, Fernandinho had 2 then left, Gundogan had one then left, Walker had a season and a half then left, KDB had half a season then left. Bernardo’s contract is up this summer so the pattern looks like continuing. It will be 6 different captains in 7 seasons.

I can see what Pep is maybe trying to do with Bernardo, but from the outside it’s a bit mental to give the captaincy to someone that has been asking to leave for the last 3 years. Should have been Dias or Rodri without a doubt.

Bernardo was also the most critical of the team’s performances last season which probably influenced the decision.

Not a surprise, he has already been one of the leaders for a few years now.

But on picking THE leader, I can see Pep going with the guy he trusts the most, whose heart is worn on his sleeve, who exemplifies it on the pitch as well.

Bernie is going to play alot more than some realize.

Just because Bernie is in the group doesn’t mean he’s definitely staying either, but I reckon he’s the more likely to stay. Pretty sure Gundo will be off, he’d have definitely been in the group if he was staying as we could have easily named 5, I’d guess the Turkey rumours have more than a grain of truth about them.
I think he is tbf

There's no difference between this appointment and the appointments of David Silva, Fernandinho and Gundogan, all of whom had one year left on their deals.

Dias and Rodri need to focus on getting back to their best. One of them will be club captain next season.

I first said Dias, but I'm happy with Bernie. I know some disagree, but I don't blame him for last season; when everyone else was dropping like flies, Bernie ran himself into the ground week after week. He needed a break but couldn't get one. We know he'll leave eventually, but he's been a consummate professional whilst here, unlike a certain individual who took over as captain last summer.

Yeah, it's probably that simple.

It's Bernie's last year, he will be even more motivated to leave on a high, especially as captain.

Next season the simple swap for Bernie is Foden growing into more of a leadership position, with Rodri and Dias being the main captain(s).

I think he may actually get an extension if he has a good season.

A very competent choice imo.. just look at Khusanov's first game vs Chelsea.. he provided cover for Khusanov and made sure he was available to move the ball upfield relieving the pressure.

Also he's only 30 and he's had to do the work of a lot of people in a bad season. If the people around him do their part.. we could have a very useful Bernardo for more than 1 year possibly!

Either way we'll see!

What really intrigues me is Pep openly saying he didn't like what happened last season.. we'll never see the details but we know now it must not have been pretty.

I was intrigued by Pep’s comment that he has not left it to a vote this year as he was not happy with the outcome last year. Whatever did he mean?
