Is there any free software around that let's you do this?[/i]

pause the dvd, press print screen on your keyboard and paste the image into paint, then save it as a bitmap or jpeg.

nerovision on nero 7 will allow you to do this...you can simply push take picture button as its playing and it will save the image that was on the screen as you pushed the button....

i took the smith dvd and got images of the strangeways sign that used to be at the corner of cheetham hill road and mozza on his bike, etc

Winvid which is a dvd playing app for windows lets use capture screens whilst your watching
Can't find a 'proper' download link for this matey. Is winvid its proper name? I just get directed to rather dubious 'crack' sites.

Ta for your help.

There's a couple of things you can do.

There's a program called VLC Media Player that has a snapshot function.

Or if you want a really round about way of doing it. In Windows media, go into Tools ---- Options. Then go into the performance tab. And turn Video Acceleration to none, this will allow you to take screen prints (via the keyboard) of your screen (previosuly, if that was turned on, all you would recieve was a blank screen where the video window was).

Ah ... that's what's been happening. Was using that SnagIt programme and just when I thought I'd saved a couple of pics all they turned out to be were blank screenshots. Was driving me crazy as they'd appeared to be originally captured. Will try this method. Ta.

Did you try the VLC player? the screenshot option is just right there!
Not sure. Downloading it now and will have a play later. Tried a couple of programmes without success. Can't remember if this was one of them.

Will report back!

I give up. This VLC programme will play 'normal' DVDs and I can get a snaphot OK but the one I want (a Graduation ceremony disc made by the Uni itself) doesn't show up as a DVD and can't be accessed or played. But I CAN play it with another programme that doesn't have the snapshot facility.

Is it all to do with codecs n' copyright and s*it I know zip about?
