Can any bluemooners help me on where I stand with the below.

I have only 2 months left to run on my car insurance but I've just sold my car. I thought I could ring up and cancel it as thats what I was told by everybody, however when I phoned today they said I had to pay the last two months insurance as I had an accident in November and someone can still claim against me (they defo aren't though).

They said that the claim can happen against them for up to 10 years but I don't understand why I would have to pay an addtional 2 months against a car I don't own. Please help!

I don't think there is much you can do to be honest. The contract there is to protect them from this sort of thing. It's the same with properties, phones etc.

It exists to put a minimum term on financial obligations to ensure that the engagement is worthwhile.

Even if you'd not have had an accident you'd still be expected to pay

Yeah i'd agree with that , i think the missus faced the same problem a couple of years back , and had to pay ...

but as far as any accident goes , if you'd been involved in one seven months ago , surely any claims would have gone in by now , as you infer ...

I don't understand how this works though as my friend has had a refund of his annual insurance when he cancelled his.

Had a refund of the remainder? Had he paid in full at the beginning, or did he pay direct debit? Had he gone over any initial engagement term?

That does surprise me to be honest.

Check the terms and conditions in your contract. It should have a section termed "conditions of termination" or similar. That should explain where you stand on breaking a contract.

Some contracts will have benefits such as freedom to cancel after a certain timescale.
