Car insurance - Just been robbed

I believe Manchester is the highest in the UK, I can see why so many people drive without insurance, they just get a slap on the wrist and lose their liscence (if they have one) but then just carry on driving anyway. I'm 43 and pay over £800 for a 4x4 if I moved out to a better postcode it would probably half.

I have come to vent some anger fellow bluemooners,

Because I am 21 my car insurance is naturally high, I paid £213 a month last year on a 1.6sr golf. Which I was fine with as it's a fairly powerful car and is a high category.

However in January of this year I crashed my old golf and wrote it off, it took around 4 months but eventually the claim got settled in my favour, non fault, and I got paid out, car wrote off + injuries.

So last week I was getting quotes for around £115 a month which I was very happy with, I then got a phone call off my solicitor stating that the third party is taking the claim to court to appeal. This now means my claim is opened back up and is classed as 'pending'

I have literally just renewed my insurance for £480 a month. Yeah you read that right, no typo, £480 a MONTH.

My insurance assures me that if the court case is settled in my favour then I will get the premium back as if I had my original 2 years NCD. He believes (off the record) somewhere around £300 a month.

Rant over. Thanks for reading.

Good lord ...... £480 a month??

I'd have a heart attack !

I'm 55 , and i pay Liverpool Vic £52 per month for my five year old Toytota Avensis ..... and i think that's too much !

Fuck me, you could get a chaffeur driven limo for that sort of cash.

I'm with the OP and was going to start a thread but I will bang it on here.
2 months ago the motorway ground to a halt. The car in front of me stopped so I did as well. Unfortunately the stupid idiot behind didn't and rear ended me. Her insurance paid out in full. I did not lose any NCD. But when I come to get a new quote at renewal time it is £75 dearer because and I quote 'statistically because you have been involved in an accident you are more likely to have an another one therefore your premium has gone up'.

Needless to say I am looking around but they are all robbing bastards, I am in my 50's never had an accident that was my fault or 50-50 and yet, because some woman, probably listening to One Dimension and thinking about what colour shoes to buy, decides to ram me I have to pay more.

I looked into why premiums rise and got a reduction.I had a brand new car which caught fire through an electrical fault. The insurance paid up and pursued the manufacturer for the cost which was successful and went down as a no claim. The insurer then put the premium up as it was deemed I was then a higher risk.I took this up with them and was surprised to learn that if an incident occurs then you are partly to blame so if someone runs into you they calculate that you contributed by getting in the way. They reduced the premium which meant my 3.2 merc now costs £300 a year fully comp as opposed to £1200 they originally asked for

Kenny, No offence why at 21 did you get that spec of car? All young drivers are hammered on insurance even more so with that car

-- Wed Nov 07, 2012 11:09 am --

£480 a month. That is less than my first mortgage!
It's a clear £100 more than my current mortgage. When you look at it that way it's a fucking piss take really.

So true Pige, It does make me laugh on the flip side why young people cant get a mortgage but will pay £400 for insurance a month. I did not learn to drive until i got my first house

Don't pay it, you're a mug if you do. Don't confuse that with driving around with no insurance, just don't drive if you can get away with not doing. No one can really afford that each month just to insure a car, it's outrageous.

Just to make you feel even worse than you do already, my car costs just another £200 on top of that to insure for the whole year. I love being 35. :-)

I think the law now is you have to insure a car if you own it

-- Wed Nov 07, 2012 11:34 am --

No offence mate but when you need £20,000 deposit buying a house takes quite a while. Granted a lot less if you are not shifting out £400 a month but even saving that you will be walking around for a long time. I passed 9 years ago and my insurance is more now than it was when I passed

A few scatter cushions and a fancy lamp on the dashboard and live in the car. Problem solved.
