If you've got a car but have no insurance on it, is it still ok for other people to drive your car?

Absolutely no way!

Any car on the road has to have insurance in its own right, regardless of whether or not any driver using has their own insurance allowing them to drive other cars.

If someone uses your car on the raod and they pass one of those number plate recognition cameras, they will be stopped, your car will be taken off them and possibly crushed - I know someone this happened to.

Also, is it taxed? Not normally possible to get tax without an insurance certificate for the reg.

Your vehicle doesn't need to be insured as long as the person driving it is. It will only get removed and crushed if their is 'no' valid insurance on the driver.

I thought they could only drive it if they have your permission and you have insurance

correct, this is to stop people getting insured on a cheap to insure car then driving a high powered car with the cheap insurance.

Yes mate it's taxed til December, I taxed it for a year but my insurance expired earlier this month

Another factor about someone else using their insurance is that they can only do that if your insurance policy allows it. So if your insurance only covers named drivers and someone else who is not named drives the car, legally speaking, they are not insured.

I would suggest that not having any insurance means that no one is allowed to drive it, whatever their own policy might say.

If the police check your number plate it will be immediately shown that there is no insurance on the car and it can be impounded there and then.

if the car is parked on a public highway, then i thought it had to be insured at all times. If the vehicle is left parked on a driveway or in a garage, then it's upto the car owner if they want it insured our not??

Most policies have a driving other cars extension on them which is a wording on the certificate saying you can drive other peoples car with their permission. That will only cover you for third party only (so damage or injuries you cause) not theft or fire but then again cars dont get stolen while you are in them! They dont need to have comprehensive cover on their car this DOC extension is added if you are normally over 25 or 21 with certain companies and dont have any significant driving convictions. I have heard of the police querying this though as really a car being driven should be insured by its owner.
The majority of insurers are removing this extension.

It's no longer on my policy.

I'm only 3rd party fire and theft but thats in my policey and i renewed on April 12th.

If on a Public Highway (In other words not on your drive) all cars need. A valid MOT, Insurance and TAX with out any one of the three the others become invalid. Done some googling since my last and this seem to be the case. Best advice is the person who is driving it check with his insurance company to see if he is valid. You may well find as the car has no insurance with the owner he will have to put it on his at a cost. People saying you can may be right on there policy but remember all poilicies are different for every person.
