ok time to get technical,check the water like advised if low top up with anti freeze and water,if it does it again within a short space of time you obviously got a bigger problem,if the car as not got anti freeze in it you will probably have done the head gasket a common fault in the cold weather if not that another common fault on the golfs is the water pump or it may just be a hole in the radiator or just a split hose either way i would getting it looked at as soon as poss,if you need anymore help feel free to get in touch
