caribbean island holidays

St Lucia or Anigua are beautiful.

Mexico and Cuba are also great and are safe to travel about at night (I'm talking about Riviera Maya, not Juarez and Sinaloa).

Negril is a bit safer that say Ocho Rios in Jamaica but still, it's Jamaica.

BVI/USVI "are" the Caribbean that everyone craves. I've visited a few of them and they are all beautiful, great beaches, often with multi-island views. Beyond that, it is all personal taste and depth of your pockets. Some islands close at 9pm and some have vibrant nightlife. Google Earth and the internet (Trip Advisor-type reviews and pics) are your friend on searches like this.

We loved St Maarten (in town and out at Orient Beach, which was great!) when we stopped over on a Caribbean cruise, and found St Thomas (town, especially) lacking. Turk & Caicos has some of the most beautiful beaches (and resorts, like The Shore Club!!!) anywhere, but is very expensive.

Mexican Riviera has fantastic beaches, plenty to do all along the coast (beaches, Mayan ruins, scuba, snorkeling, deep sea fishing) and is far more moderately priced.

ABCs are beautiful Deep South Caribbean islands, with Aruba having some of the best beaches in the world, Bonaire being a considerably more spartan island that specializes in scuba diving, but I haven't been to Curaçao.

Canadians have been raving about Cuba and Cuban resorts for years, but as an American passport holder who needs to NOT get on the wrong side of the State Dept or Homeland Security, I can't vouch for life on the ground, but from the air the beaches look spectacular!

The DR (Dominican Republic) might be worth a look if you don't have deep pockets. All inclusives are some of the best value in the Caribbean. Beaches are very nice, but transportation between resort areas can be an issue, depending on what and where you want to go from where you're staying. I've stayed at A-Is there, as they are great value. Then again, as with most A-Is, the food quality can be disappointing, with some places having an upcharge to eat in their upscale restaurants.

As always, research is your friend and caveat emptor. When we travel, we concentrate on picking the very best of the first choice we are going there, then look down our list of desires and decide what we can and cannot live without. That first choice is key, be it beaches, nightlife, diving, sailing, fishing, whatever. At least that way, your primary motivator for going won't ever disappoint, and you can sometimes be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the lower list wants.

Jamaica would be close to the bottom of my list. Once you are "off resort" you are fair game and rarely the apex predator.
Call me fucked up, but I love visiting edgy places like that. It may very well cost me one day.

Previously been to the Dominican Republic and Antuiga.

I'm debating either Jamaica or Barbados for a week in January with my girlfriend at the moment.

any of you guys been out there,i'm thinking of booking but not sure which place to visit, was thinking of Antigua but im still not sure..apart from the hotel im looking for like beach bars at night with music and local towns to go around during the day etc..
thanks in advance

I've spent a fair amount of time around different islands. But for beach bars / music and stuff to visit, I'd recommend Playa Del Carmen, just south of Cancun in Mexico.

Check how your girlfriend feels about you getting mugged by a gang of young lads while she watches on and wonders if she is going to make it home to the hotel or be their plaything in some empty concrete shell along the roadside....then pick Barbados!

I'd leave her at the hotel! Not fair over-inflicting my weirdness on her any more than is necessary.
