Case for Erling Haaland to be the PFA Player of the season.

Bernardo Silva for me this season.

Top scorers have surprisingly only won just 10 of 33 PFA POTS awards in the PL era and 10 of 31 PL POTS awards.

Every PL season’s top scorer : PFA POTS : and PL POTS…

1992-93 - top scorer Sheringham : PFA POTS McGrath : PL POTS did not exist yet
1993-94 - Cole : Cantona : PL POTS did not exist yet
1994-95 - Shearer : Shearer : Shearer
1995-96 - Shearer : LFerdinand : Schmeichel
1996-97 - Shearer : Shearer : Juninho
1997-98 - Dublin : Bergkamp : Owen
1998-99 - Hasselbaink : Ginola : Yorke
1999-00 - Phillips : Keane : Phillips
2000-01 - Hasselbaink : Sheringham : Vieira
2001-02 - Henry : van Nistelrooy : Ljunberg
2002-03 - van Nistrlrooy : Henry : van Nistrlrooy
2003-04 - Henry : Henry : Henry

2004-05 - Henry : Terry : Lampard
2005-06 - Henry : Gerrard : Henry
2006-07 - Drogba : CRonaldo : CRonaldo
2007-08 - CRonaldo : CRonaldo : CRonaldo
2008-09 - Anelka : Giggs : Vidic
2009-10 - Drogba : Rooney : Rooney
2010-11 - Berbatov : Bale : Vidic
2011-12 - van Persie : van Persie : Kompany
2012-13 - van Persie : Bale : Bale
2013-14 - Suarez : Suarez : Suarez
2014-15 - Agüero : Hazard : Hazard
2015-16 - Kane : Mahrez : Vardy
2016-17 - Kane : Kante : Kante
2017-18 - Salah : Salah : Salah

2019-20 - Vardy : De Bruyne : De Bruyne
2020-21 - Kane : De Bruyne : Dias
2021-22 - Salah : Salah : De Bruyne
2022-23 - Haaland : Haaland : Haaland
2023-24 - Haaland : Foden : Foden
2024-25 - Salah : Salah : Salah

Yaya Touré missed out on a deserved POTS to a top scorer in 2013-24, De Bruyne missed out on a deserved POTS to a top scorer in 2017-18 and Rodri missed out on a deserved POTS to a top scorer in 2022-23 (and also missed out on it to a non-top scorer in 2023-24).

He's the best player in the league and been the best player this season yet I don't think he'll even be close to winning it. Victim of his own standards, everybody just expects him to be having record breaking seasons every year now and so don't appreciate his brilliance anywhere near as much as is warranted. Our own fans are as guilty of this as anybody else. Just look how many have inexplicably wanted Haaland dropped or even sold at various points over the last 18 months.

Why not Semenyo? He's been quality ALL season and not just 3 months - like the rat.

Guèhi has won two trophies already.

Not for me this time

Haaland is a world-class player and would get into any team, but this season, he's been patchy and from the start of the season the when he was flying to there was a big drop off and it's slowly coming back in the run-in

Nico O'Reilly is nailed on for young player of the year

You won’t believe this don’t know if they was joking or not but heard a radio pundit say that young 16 years old from Arsenal.
Cant remember his name at the moment

A team that recons to have a full squad needs to really on a 16 year old unbelievable.,

In my opinion no mater how talented he suppose to be a club should protect a young prodigy How many young starlets have fallen by the wayside

It would be Bernardo or Nico O Reilly for me. Haaland I don’t think has had a great season overall. As stated though there has not really been a standout player this year

A lot of the player's treat it as a joke, and those who take it more seriously may just use their experience of playing against them in two games. It isn't who scored the most goals.

There will be over 500 voting.

City fans suggesting Rodri or Bernardo on the back of a decent two months are a bit deluded. Also if players don't like a player they won't vote for them.

Would you begrudge someone a golden boot if a chuck of that haul came from penalties?
The golden boot goes to the player who scores the most goals. The goals don’t have to be any good, they could score 30 tap ins, whereas the player who comes 2nd scores 25 really well taken goals of a wide variety. The player with the 30 taps in still wins it. The quality of the goals or player are irrelevant.

With POTS we are looking at “the player of the season” ie the best overall player that season. This is about a lot more than just quantity or statistics. It’s about quality, consistency and impact.

With assists, the player is wholly dependent on the player he passes to scoring. Thousands of would be assists per season go out the window because of this. So the statistic is somewhat misleading if you dig below the surface.

Fernandes has won fuck all this season. His team went out the cups early. His assists haven’t achieved anything, they basically mean fuck all. Plus, he’s only been playing one game a week for months.

Have a look at the video. Most of the assists are from corners or free kicks. One of them is a 1 yard knock to Mount ffs. There’s nothing unusual or brilliant about any of them. Statistics alone do not make a “player of the season”.

If you’re watching the video and thinking “fuck me, definitely player of the season” because he has a number of pretty mundane assists, you’re very easily impressed.

If we’re playing your game and going off statistics, the clear winner is Elliot Anderson, who has leading statistics across most measured domains.

Don't think this season has been of the highest quality.
Neither City and Arsenal (by far the 2 best teams) have a stand out candidate.
But, often a player stands out from an average or under-performing team.
Perhaps, Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs White or Eliot Anderson are in with a shout ?

Haaland deserves it:

31 GA in 31 starts is simply great.

Over 40 GA in all compets with potentially 7 games to go. 50 GA is a genuine possibility now.

O'Reilly deserves to be nominated.

Always eyes over stats for me. Nunes Khus Nico and Silva have all been better this season imho.

You conflate consistency with overall quality. These players have been more consistent in their performances, as Haaland's form dipped in January (mostly) and March, parts of February too. But when he was at it, he was easily the best player in the league. 31 GA in 31 league starts is top, top level. His goals vs Arsenal and 2 G/A at Anfield were absolutely crucial.

Also, eyes don't tell the whole story. Haaland occupies the CBs and opens up spaces for Cherki and O'Reilly.

So you admit his form has been poor but a contender for player of the year? Funny stuff. His goals and assists while impressive don't relate in comparing him to say Nico who has played Mid of Lb, to my eyes Nico has played many more better games this season.
Odd to actually base it on how well and how often someone has played to some though I guess :-)
