Clear plastic fizzy drink bottles half filled with water is supposed to work. Apparantly it distorts light and reflections which annoy or confuse them.

Used to have a Cat Lady living near us at our old house tried that and loads of other things, to no avail, they would be shitting in my garden, scratching up plants etc, I then got a coil type hose pipe with a trigger switch, they had become pretty fearless, and just used to sit on top of a high wall, taking the piss, a few blasts with the hose did the trick, they lean quite fast do cats and they hate getting wet.
