Well, that was fun. Before the game my hopes were simple. I knew that we didnt have a defence, or a goalie, who should be assured a game for Kilmarnock. And as a consequence of that, we would struggle. That was a given and as given's do, it came true. If we were to keep that defence, then any hope of even challenging for the title, would be as daft as me trying a backflip on a highwire, with a washing machine, full load, on my shoulders. We started with Ralston, cant believe he even made it as a pro player, truly woeful. Taylor, a Kilmarnock player we signed who tries hard but lacks even a rudimentary ability to pass a ball and who couldnt cross a ball if civilisation itself depended upon it. There are some within our support who think he is good, they havent a fucking clue and I instantly dismiss them as happy clapping people, who couldn't see a player if one booted them up the arse. Murray, only 18, but does look as if he has something about him, but, nowhere near ready, and his inexperience showed with slack passing that caused a goal and failed to keep an eye on West Hams strikers, getting caught out of position. Welsh, played last season laterly, and did well in the CL game, but for me, not good enough to be a first pick. Barkas, who is to the art of goalkeeping, what I am to the art of keeping quiet when i disagree with people. Not happening. They were cruelly exposed by good players. For two of the back five, a lesson. For the other three, a final confirmation they cant play against teams of that level.
The only saving grace for me, is even our board must now see what needs to be done and what their ineptitude has caused. As Gunner conceded, this will not be our defence, as much as he would love it to be.
But, my forum friends, it is not all doom and gloom from me for a change. Last year, we were truly, unbelievably, shit all over the park. We created nothing, were slow, ponderous and played like rabbits caught in the headlights. For a good part of the first half we were fast, good passing and movement, took the game to them and played so much better than I have seen us for quite some time. We have Sterfeld, a CB signed who looks good. We have the the Japanese player in who will increase our attacking threat and young Abada looks really good too. Our midfield is looking good too. Soro, Turnbull, McGreggor and Christie, if we keep him, will be excellent.
Its all down to replacing the defence completely. I am all for anything that makes that clearly required. Yesterday was an epic indicator that we need to get our dithering finger out. To me its a dereliction of duty that we are in the CL without new derenders. Truly woeful but not a surprise. We have to play the return leg with the same defence and although we were better than them the first leg, to think we can stop them scoring is a tall order. The CL could very well be over, yet again, due to never being prepared.
Ange is not to blame. He has us playing better from mid to front and is going to improve that even more. When we get a defence worthy of the name, we will transform. I have no doubt about that, i just hope this week sees the beginning of signings of two fullbacks, another CB and a goalie. Getting handed your arse 6.2 should put a rocket up the arse of any board. Any that is, apart from us. I once again will do my annual hoping they finally wake up and stop being incompetent, useless, cheapskate, dithering cunts. They are our biggest threat of failing this year. They always are.
