Centre back options

If you were VVD and had the option of joining City with an almost guaranteed Premier League winners medal let alone an outside chance of achieving a quadruple, or joining Liverpool with a 50% chance of Top 4 and not much else, then what would you choose?

I think it's a dead cert that if PEP wants VVD then City get VVD. The same said for Sanchez.

Southampton won't sell him, not to Liverpool, us or anyone else (except maybe abroad). They have him on a contract until 2022 and are going to milk it for all it's worth.

Van Dijk would be a great addition for January. Not that reliable defensively but he has no problems with carrying the ball up the pitch and being the deepest line of attack. Defending wise he will benefit from Pep's coaching, I feel he is just not coached properly hence why his positional sense against a counter is poor.

Think VVD would be a short-sighted buy. Make no mistake, he would do the job very well but he's not gonna be the next Puyol or Pique. Stones has that potential - to be one of the best CBs in the world; VVD most definitely is not at that level. Plus he's 26. I would prefer if we bought a 22-23 yr old as talented as Stones to make sure we've got the best CB pairing in the world for the next decade. Defensive stability wins titles. VVD is going to cost 60-70 mil and he's nowhere worth that much. There's an abundance of really good and young CBs right now and we should look to exploit that. De Ligt, Yerry Mina, Škriniar, even Christiansen from Chelsea. We would be mad to spend that much on VVD.

Hes awfull clumsy and rash no chance.

He's been consistently good this season. I think the criticisms to him right now are very similar to what Stones had the year he joined. I'd imagine Pep would work wonders on him too. Though I think he's gonna cost more than what we're willing to spend for a third CB.

Surprised there is criticism of van dijk. He is a class player who is solid on the ball and off it and would complement Stones. We have spent enough on foreign based players who take time to adapt, we need someone who knows the league so he can slot in straight away.

Van Dijk is a good player, but Stones will be back from injury soon, and Ota is in great form. They should be our first choice centre backs when available, but if we spend £50m on van Dijk in Jan then one of them will get dropped, which is really harsh.

Having said that, when one of Ota and Stones is out we don't have much reliable cover!

So sign van dijk then. We need at three quality centre backs, even if it means one has to sit on the bench. They will all get game time.

He may want assured game time which he would surely get wit the dippers

My only worry at CB is if Stones / Otamendi are injured for any amount of time we are resting our hopes on VK being fit / Mangala stepping up.

Just can’t see Pep buying another young defender, maybe he sees VVD (if he was interested in him) as the VK replacement in a way. Lead the back line, experienced defender, knows the PL. Rather than someone he has to coach on the ways of the PL.

I don’t think VVD is worth 60m but if Pep wants him and we are willing to spend it. Could see him being a great addition for later rounds of CL and big Prem games.

Pretty clear from the pressy yesterday, City will make a strong attempt at acquiring a central defender, at a minimum in January

If we make the right central defensive purchase in January and possibly strengthen in a couple of other areas I can seriously see us cleaning up. If we can replace players like for like in terms of abikity this could be the season of all seasons.

I wouldn't be surprised if they sold van Dijk. He was doing his best to leave in the summer and seemed pretty disappointed he didn't get he move. That should help our stance in negotiations, even if Southampton want to keep the price where they quoted it at with Liverpool. I also think they'd be more willing to sell to someone besides Liverpool assuming it was still for good money.

Not saying I think he's worth it or we should pay it but I'd guess if we bought van Dijk it would be for around £50m.
