Chairman's Interview

Chelsea finished 4th, just. Lost at VIlla when they had to win, lost at home to Arsenal when they had to win, lost an FA Cup Final. Got beat by WBA at home. All important games. They are not the better side. They were better on the day because Pep made a tactical mistake and opted not to correct it mid-game.
Bang on Marvin, not very often that gets said ;-)

Not so sure about that, Pep has had a wonderful season but it could and maybe should have been even better.

We lost two major matches this season against Chelsea, both were very below par peformances.

Saturday was a major disappointment, the team that has done so much this season did not turn up and that was difficult to watch. No team is entitled to win everything, but the City I watched was not the team that stormed to the title and dominated the domestic game.

Tactics, form or fatigue it still needs addressing, that's how you learn and move on and better yourself.

The last bit is why Khaldoon will understand Saturdays result and will sympathise with Pep instead of bollocking him. He made a tactical mistake, it happens. Pep will be looking back now and regret not starting his best 11. But he may have seen something in his analysis pre match to justify playing the team he did.

Like you said, everyone moves on and there’s no point looking back in anger. Pep is a winner and we’ve got a squad full of players of love winning.

Class act and the reason we are in such a good place.

In saying that, I hope he gave Pep a grilling about Saturday. We missed a wonderful opportunity to win the biggest trophy of them all, the best team won on the day but a team that is simply not at the same level as ourselves. Our defeat was largely self inflicted.
A one off brainfart/tactical cluster fuck is not a problem, but when its becoming a chronic isssue.....then yes, such a self inflicted loss needs addressing and explaining.

Pep is a wonderful manager,he has been incredible for us and i recognise how fortunate we have been, but he clearly isn't faultless,or untouchable, and that too should be recognised.

No one is talking bollockings, I am saying I hope he had an explanation from Pep, why he, Pep thought it went wrong.

You learn from mistakes as the Chairman said, it makes you stronger and better prepared.

Pep has not won the Champions League for a long time, despite managing teams more than capable of doing so. That is a weakness, one Pep can improve on and I am sure he will and with us.

Exactly the point I am making, He, Pep needs to learn and improve just as we do as a club.

Interesting body language, arms folded and defensive when questioned about the champions league but completely relaxed and open when questioned about the dynasty, that loss in the final hurt a lot more than he said!

'Better' can't, in football, just be measured by a simple scoreline. CFC came up with an impressivel or jsut successful defensive performance and, as is often the case, when we lose a game it's because of another single mistake in the heat of a movement. We have conceded some goals by players who won't score fifty PL goals in their career. Give a journeyman pro a chance and he may well score. But I'd hardly say CFC were better. They may have carved out better 'chances' but missed them! At the end of the day people are just happy with winning, whether it's 1-0 or 5-0. We were far \better' than CFC in the ambition we displayed, but unfortunately ambition often isn't enough.

As long as the No.1 priority is the PL then that is all that matters to me, everything else is a bonus.

We have not made too many mistakes in the transfer market and I trust the Club to bring in a couple of crackers in the close season, Sterling will probably leave but as his form has hit a brick wall Torres will be a more than adequate replacement. We have to get Mendy out off the Club even if it is off on loan somewhere.

But the 'secret' is not to show it, accommodate it and make it look as though it's all part and parcel of the plan in its accommodation, file it, learn any lessons that need assimilating, and then onwards. Perfect way for development to continue.

what was the tactical mistake and how did it stop us winning?

Once upon a time yer could shove 'em in the Stiffs for a handful of games.

Have you read any of the post match thread, or listened to any of the footy podcasts or read any of the print journalist analysis articles since the game? I ask because it has been point out, just a bit, already.

No mention of the ESL so far. Whilst I find his approach and manner calming after a poor result, I don't think he has said all that much yet, aside from learning from the mistakes of the past and signing quality players who can challenge for a first team place, rather than place fillers.

But let's take it in context. We're a hell of a team, next season we can achieve even more and there is a definite challenge for us to rise to. Just look at the treatment other premier club's chair people give their fans. Bit of a difference. And we don't get encouraged to wear zebra print onesies to prove we are real fans either.

he`s an absolute don is our chairman! Very nice to hear him talking about the long term as well? The only thing i slightly disagree with was he said he had learned that you need to strengthen when at the top but we have never actually done that? Hopefully the likes of Kane, Grealish, Rice/Bissouma etc are brought in to keep ourselves ahead of the pack.
We have failed twice to strengthen after winning the title, I think this year we will make a statement of intent, the high class striker has to be bought and I have no doubt he will.

Excellent observations Columbo;)

I noticed that myself, not sure if we should read too much into it. If the owners are not pissed off by that abject performance then they are in the wrong sport. Privately I would expect a robust review but publicly it will be calm and supportive imo.

what was the tactical mistake and how did it stop us winning?
Never mind tactics. Mentally we were beaten before we stepped on the pitch. Go back and look at the difference between the 2 teams in the tunnel before the match. We looked scared but the Chelsea players looked unfazed and focused. We rediscovered a weak mindset. Now whether that was because the players did not like how pep had set us up or the occasion and being favourites had us nervous is anyone’s guess.
