Champions League Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid

Ronaldo bottles it again

Yet another big game goes by without the slightest hint that Ronaldo is one of the best players on the park.

Flat track bully. If you want to win the league fine. He gets lots of opportunities to score against the like of Granada/Wolves etc

But put him up against the big boys and he repeatedly gets outshone. Messi obviously, but tonight I thought Ribery looked a much more complete player.

We were superb tonight. Ronaldo never got a kick, Marcelo should have been sent off.
Super Mario gives us a deserved win, very happy.

P.S. I thought Howard Webb had a great game.

-- Tue Apr 17, 2012 9:20 pm --

Ribery was world class, absolutely great tonight !

At one point in during the second half he had 15 passes all game and completed 53% of them.

Nullified by Lahm, so he moves over to the right and is even more nullified by Alaba. I said in the beginning of the thread, much rather have Robben for a massive game, even though Ribery outshone either tonight.

quite sobering watching that, City are still some way below that level. Only a matter of time of course but we are not there just yet

Was going to post pretty much the same. He will almost certainly guarantee you domestic glory, but not everyone can turn it on on the very biggest stages. He just doesn't seem to be one of those players. That said there is a stark contrast between how Real Madrid play against the rest of La Liga and how they play when coming up against someone like Barca or even as shown Bayern (granted there aren't many of these teams and frankly they're probably the only two, they'd still walk our league). On the flipside Barca play like Barca against everyone. There isn't a team on the planet that will out posses them, so they can go into every game on a strong footing of already dictating how the game is going to go. This will be massively to Messi's benefit, and very much to Ronaldo's detriment.

Ribery or Robben may be able to reproduce their ability against the best, but Ronaldo is pretty much a model of consistency, and we're finding out how hard it is first hand that no matter how great or talented you can be in a single game (6-1 ofc), keeping that consistency over a whole season is really, really difficult.

Edit: Lol at this though,

Ronaldo in big games:

I'll believe he's world class if he plays as good in Madrid

You think so? I actually reckon the form we are in at the moment could take Bayern to pieces at home. They beat us with two stupid goals, after we dominated them for the first 30 minutes away.

Wouldn't want to argue against that. City got the quality to nick in 2 or 3 against Bayern any day.
Still... turning on the machine at the big stage (UCL Semis) isn't as easy to do as when playing your good ol' league adversary which you get to play for 3 points twice a year. So not nearly as much pressure there. In the end it all comes down to your state of mind on a certain day for 90 plus some odd minutes while you feel the pressure that any mistake could cost you half a year full of efforts.

That's probably the reason why Ronaldo keeps on failing to perform on the big stage. He just seems to be unable to concentrate. It almost looks like he's constantly thinking "Gotta do something special now!" just to bottle it right then and there.
