Champions league revamp? (Merged)

It'd be a disgrace if it was allowed to happen. I couldn't stop going to watch City in the competition though.

it will be the beginning of the end of competitive football. mark my words, when this is introduced, it will take the owners of most of the premier league teams no time at all to vote this in so that there is no more promotion or relegation to "protect the brands"

sometimes progress is not good.
agree

Sad **** clubs taking their ball home with them because half of them are too shit (united, Liverpool and AC Milan especially) at managing their business well enough to achieve things on merit. Good riddance to them if they do it. The European Cup format was changed to specifically save these twats from ever dropping out of it but still they have conspired to be too shit. They forced Platini to introduce FFP to help them but still it isn't enough. And they said we were ruining football, oh the irony.

quod non mortalia pectora coges, auri sacra fames!

I imagine the teams would be allowed into the last qualifying round perhaps?
Completely unfair of course. A completely closed shop would be pointless in the long run and I could see yet more legal battles ahead.
Do Aston Villa and Forest qualify then? No I thought not.

Finally they have the balls to say what is the most important thing, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY. Nothing to do with the football you will be served up, nothing about competition and being the hardest trophy to win, but it all boils down to clicks on a computer and a televised audience promoting advertisements and surprise surprise who are leading the way the Rags, backed by Americans and Liverpool backed again by americans, who at last get what they want which is a business to earn and guarantee them an income and a profitable sale.

I hope the fuckers go under.

Official CL sponsors adidas probably aren't too happy that Trafford, Chelsea and AC Milan are not in their "competition". Throw Gill into the mix and it's probably already a done deal.

These meatheads think that they are losing out on revenue due to the absence of certain teams (ie, chelsea, liverpool, scum etc).
What they fail to realize is that the plastics that currently watch these teams in the champions league will soon jump ship to which ever teams take their place.
I eagerly look forward to a stadium full of chinese tourists with old "Rooney" shirts on chanting Leicester.

As a fan of football in general as well as the mighty blues... I would have zero interest in winning an invitational tournament (if we were invited) what would be the point being the champions of the most popular clubs when the best team might not be in it?!

How could teams in this super league continue in their domestic league with any purpose? Greed will end up killing the game as we know it. The chance, however remote, of winning a competition by being the best together with promotion and relegation is what keeps fans of all clubs interested. The US model of a closed shop will not necessarily work in the rest of the World.

This was always going to happen sooner or later, just enjoy football as it is now for the next 3/4 years as this will kill it stone dead for all bar the fans of the "old guard". They will lap this up like the clueless clowns we all know they are, just like they did with FFP. I wouldn't care either way if City are in it or not as it will be a sham of a competition no matter how they dress it up.

I have to say this idea is horrible to a fan of football.

What criteria would be used? Turnover - well that excludes most of Europe due to the Premier League TV deal? History - who decideds that one? European trophies? Number of fans?

This would be fraught with legal challenges

My conern is that the big clubs like United and Liverpool need this as they cannot get onto the European gravy train by fair means so they hvae to rty foul. It is strange that the owners of both these clubs are American who are used to the idea of closed shops

My fear is that Gill has a stroing hand in Uefa and FIFA and the FA job is available if he gets that (and I have heard his name mooted) then a non-exec Director of United is in a seat of power on all the major football organisations

The only thing that Gill has going for him is that Utd were adamantly against individual club TV deals in England. I think even he might see that this idea is shooting the golden goose.

If UEFA and the top clubs break up... bollocks to football in Europe. It'd eat away at the history and water down the market. A 2nd rate competition with money backing is still 2nd rate? An approved competition with the top dogs, who earned their place, will always find the money backers.

The NFL model of franchised businesses with no promotion or relegation is what drives this proposal. Whether the fans of the rest of the football world stand for such a closed shop is the crux of the matter. There is a lot of powerful influences at work, sponsors, TV companies and the various leagues will all want their say. The match-going fans are becoming less and less of an voice as the armchair viewers outnumber them thousands to one, , match day revenue is dwarfed by TV deals for the prem, but not everywhere , Spain being the biggest exception. What makes the future so uncertain is the Eufa/Fifa situation, both are in limbo, though they are doing their best to carry on as if the blip has been dealt with and it is business as usual.
If franchises are introduced, it would be closely followed by the rags moving to their preferred home,London, with arranged fixtures in Singapore, NY Thailand etc.
Sadly, for most of us there are dark forces at work that threaten to change football as we know it for the worse.

So basically the champions league will not be contested and won on sporting merit it will just be a popularity contest to see who's got the most fans in Asia to qualify.

Hopefully the big 3 power brokers in European football in Barca, Real and Bayern will want to keep the status quo as it is, rather than give an opportunity for the has beens of United, Liverpool, the Milan clubs etc a platform to compete again with them.

Football is about winning and losing, promotion and relegation not who has the most fans and who's got more prestige. The champs league should be back like it was in the European cup days open draw, no seedings and winner goes through over two legs. There are too many nothing games when you get into late November games in the group stages. The miss match you get between some of the teams is shocking. If the powers at be at UEFA think we want to watch Ac Milan and United sideways passing it round the back four for 90 minutes because they used to be good I'm afraid they are badly mistaken.
