Changes to Champions League Qualification 2018-19 onwards

This has the hallmarks of everything to do with tv money. Keep the top teams sweet, they stay in comp longer tv audiences stay high advertising revenue maintained or increased.

We will just have to build the best team in the world and laugh when their bent coefficient means they get hammered in the group stages.

Remember though that with the best team we will win the league which means we are in Pot 1 anyway.

If the rags,Liverpool and other "historically" successful clubs consistently fail to make the top 4 the Europa league will be scrapped, and it will be the top 6/7 qualify for a new European competition. It will be endless reforms until they get the desired outcome.

Changes announced by UEFA:
  • The UEFA Europa League winners will automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage (currently they can potentially take part in a play-off round).
  • The top four clubs from the four top-ranked national associations will now qualify automatically for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
  • The full details of the access list for both competitions will be finalised by the end of the year.
  • A new system for the club coefficients: clubs will be judged on their own records (deletion of the country share for individual club coefficient unless that coefficient is lower than 20% of the association's coefficient).
  • Historical success in the competition will also be acknowledged in coefficient calculation (points for previous European titles with a weighted system for UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League titles)
  • Financial distribution to clubs will be increased significantly for both competitions.
  • A new four-pillar financial distribution system (starting fee, performance in the competition, individual club coefficient and market pool) will see sporting performances better rewarded, while market pool share will decrease.
Victory for failing Italian teams via extra spot + boost to co-efficient from "historical success"

The two Milan clubs have evidently been greasing palms, sorry, lobbying in an honest and timely fashion, backstage at UEFA for all their worth. A horrible precedent that will end in the rags and the dippers given automatic berths regardless of domestic finishing position

Only going from the BBC article but I understood that the historical aspect benefits the countries' coefficient rather than individual teams.

If this is correct then we will benefit (a little) when the prize money is handed out from the dippers and rags past success.

Obviously even if this is so UEFA are still a bunch of corrupt cunts.

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Correct but they cannot stop us putting goals past them in those comps. Enjoy the ride blues.

I'd like to offer my congratulations to AC Milan, Inter, Liverpool, Red Star Belgrade, Celtic, Steau Bucharest, Marseille, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest on securing this advantage for themselves if they ever qualify on a consistent enough basis again to actually turn it into an advantage.

In the case of the rags, the dippers and the Milan clubs, this is the precursor to the sleazy cunts being afforded automatic entry mate

In the case of at least 3 of those 4 going by the last few years if you gave them automatic entry they'd get lost on the way to the airport.

Besides tbh it'd be funny if they did let them in, they'd be so far out of their depth at the minute against the top European sides that we could all have a good laugh at Barca/Bayern/Real/Ludogorets/PSV hammering them. :)

No. The BBC article is wrong.
The changes will affect how club co-efficients are calculated + the role of country co-efficients is being downgraded.

So it's just basically an exercise in keeping Liverpool and the rags away from being put in a group with barca, bm and rm?

Every time they change the rules it seems to be done to shaft the new boys on the block (basically us and PSG).. This time the rule they've chosen is historical success.. So the rags and dippers will get their coefficients higher because of historical success. Let's keep boooooooing fellas

The italian teams were so close to steal your 4th CL spot last year, i guess it is good for both countries and even more.
They were close at the start of the season but by the end they were even further away. That isn't close.
England started the season on 80.391 - 18.357 (CL winners in 2010/11) = 62.034
Italy started the season on 70.510 - 11.571 (2011/12 points) = 58.939
That meant that Italy needed to score an average better than England by 3.096 pts to overtake England in terms of coefficient points
CL/EL game win = +2 points
CL/EL game draw = +1 point
CL/EL qualifying game win = +1 points
CL/EL qualifying game draw = +0.5 point
CL group stage participation = 4 points.
CL R16 or later or EL QF or later participation = +1 point

Guess what? England made the gap bigger by 2.75 points as City got to the Semi final of the CL and Liverpool got to the final of the EL.
England got 114 points at an average of 14.250
Italy got 69 points at an average of 11.500

In terms of what the Group Stages will look like, this is a big victory for the lobbying of Serie A + top Italian teams.
At present they get 2 automatic (and Roma this year failed to qualify) whereas they will get 4 automatic under new system (assuming top 4 countries stay the same)

11 group stage places were guaranteed under current system for top 4 leagues (3 for Spain / England / Germany + 2 for Italy) with every league getting an additional slot via qualifier.
But English team (usually Arsenal , this year us) normally makes it through whereas not at all automatic for 3rd place Italian team.
So 16 slots in Group Stages will be pre-allocated to top 4 leagues as opposed to 11.
This will make it even more of a bun-fight for 2nd / 3rd place teams in leagues such as France / Portugal / Ukraine to qualify for Group Stages.

Also, looks like share of money going to big clubs will increase significantly.
Clubs that reach semi-finals on a regular basis + who also have high co-efficient will benefit from increased weighting to these factors + reduction in market pool factor.
RM / Barca / Bayern will see big increase in overall revenue if they stay successful at expense of perennial also-rans like Arsenal.
City can earn money from reaching semis etc and will particularly benefit if we outperform other English sides, but we may need to win the trophy a couple of times to boost our co-efficient if we want to keep up with some of the money being earnt by the elite clubs.

Changes announced by UEFA:
  • A place in Pot 1 of the group stage for Manchester United irrespective of Premier League position
  • The UEFA Europa League winners will automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage (currently they can potentially take part in a play-off round).

I think that Italy's best chance of catching England up on coefficients has now passed.

I wonder if Forest would get a look in - as twice winners?..............1979 , 1980.

France are going to drop some low scoring years in the next 2 seasons though so they might not.
