It can, I’m just not a fan of all the national anthem singing in schools etc. it’s just not my thing and I think common bonds can be built on things that aren’t so forced.

Then we agree.

Look how the Tories cast the RMT and other strikers as enemies of the people. That's why Mick Lynch reiterates over and over that his members are the people. See how Farage casts asylum seekers as criminals so that we might have no common cause with them.

The Right has always set one group against another. That's why ordinary folk must resist and forge common cause against them, a common cause based on shared values, because if we don't the rich and powerful will continue to divide and rule.

See how our once admired institutions are now discredited, Westminster, the police, the judiciary, the monarchy. Maybe it's a good thing these institutions are exposed for what they are, but the solution is not cynicism, the solution is to build institutions that do command respect because they represent us as we are, more than that, institutions that represent the best of what we are.

This might sound like a pipe dream but better institutions are built in pursuit of a pipe dream, rather than screaming a pox on all their houses, that way leads to every man for himself.

It comes down to messaging which the left struggle with. Right wing populism is always easy to spread since it usually targets one or two issues/enemies. Left wing populism is a big melting pot of coalition messaging from the pro-environment, civil rights, and economic equity.
