Chelsea 2017/2018

To an extent, I think he is. Mourinho's 4231 always had at least 3, sometimes 4 attackers on the pitch. Conte routinely line up with just Hazard and Morata. Playing 2 DMs, 3 CBs and 2 wing backs at home against teams outside the top 6 is over kill. He' stifling our creativity more than Mourinho ever did.
But that's a typically Italian style - defense first, and then counter. Comfortably won the league last year.

Something has happened in the dressing room though and also with his relationship to club management; Chelsea just aren't playing nearly as well as last season. Not as bad as the Mou-tastrophy, but still, pretty bad.

I don't think it's system/tactics - I think it's a failure to properly manage the dressing room and fallout with the owner (which hugely impacts man-management; i.e, dressing room problems are likely due in large part to lack of management backing).

Yeah, agree with the Italian bit. But as you say, last season's champions and yet they're a shadow of that team now. Odd. But then they have a history of blowing hot and cold, managers coming in and sweeping all before them, only for the following season to be a bit of an anti-climax and the result being that yet another manager bites the dust. There's even talk of Contè being sacked this week!

It's been a double-edged sword for Chelsea since Abramovich took over. On the one hand he's thrown the cash around and bought silverware and success to the club, but on the other he seems to exert a lot more influence in the changing room than he should. He seems like he's undermining the manager's authority all the time, and that will only ever cause turmoil and unrest at a club.

The rumours abound that Conte is toast in the summer unless he somehow manages to win the CL.
Being too successful in his first season is his problem.
That said which manager will go there now with the level of support in the transfer market that Conte got in the summer - except for a big pay day?

Maybe, but we've had our fair share of Italian managers, and the likes of Vialli, Ranieri and Ancelotti weren' even close to being as defensive as Conte.

The system is just a system. The failure or success of any system depends on the players you put in it. Playing with so many defensive players in any formation is overkill. Conte's tactics has placed an undue burden on Hazard IMO. We've become a proper 1 man team..

Think he could be toast on Monday if they get turned over at Watford.

I agree and no one man can carry a team every game. Especially as Hazard expends so much energy, in his style of play.

Precisely. I feel so bad for him when dribbles past 3 players tries to do a one-two with Bakayoko or Alonso, but doesn't get it back because his teammates need 3-4 touches to control a simple pass.

Neville said it'll take years to undue the mess Conte's era has left us in. I agree. We have signed so many average players it's unbelievable.
