My son has moved out to China for a new life, and career. He has been there for a week and rang me with the devastating news that he was unable to watch the City match, yesterday!

Having done a bit of research, it appears that there are issues with access to western websites and apps. Of course, a VPN would deal with that, but he is already out there.

Any advice about what he can realistically do would be gratefully received. Advice such as move back, toss himself silly, and so on (Bluemoon advice) isn't needed - he's already out of those options! PM or direct response welcome.

Setup the vpn for him and give him the login details?

Well he's essentially living under a dictatorship in China and with that means your freedoms including digital freedoms are considerably reduced.

I think our country is bad enough with the extreme digital surveillance we have here in the UK but I don't *think* this extends to blocking sites. China is another level of dystopia.

If he wants to watch the Footy he'll probably have to subscribe to the official broadcaster or head over to a local bar. I very much doubt a simple VPN workaround is much good there anymore.

I've never been to China but if it's 49 USD for an annual pass, I would go the legit route.

Chinese law is policed arbitrarily and foreigners are subject to police harassment and all kinds of bother, he could get himself unnecessary trouble for flouting the firewall.

I doubt it. Almost everyone I've ever known who lived in China has had one. I don't think they really care about foreigners accessing stuff outside the firewall. Foreigners living in China are not likely to cause a revolution any time soon.

Absolutely, he and I just didn't know that this was a possibility. Cheers.
