Why is it that I can watch a downloaded film (copied onto a USB stick) on my laptop with no issues. Yet, when I plug the stick into my blu ray player and try to watch the same film, I get this on screen message. I don't get it with all films, by the way.

Never heard of it but there's obviously some sort of security flag included in the download. Don't know if it's removable without Googling, maybe within properties? Can you not just plug it directly into the TV?

As above, there's various tools available to strip it, not tried any myself so be careful what you're downloading and installing.

Does the TV you are using have a usb socket in the side?

Why not try playing it through that instead?

Make sure it is in readable file and video formats though.
