Why does everyone keep mentioning Fabio Coentrao for the LB role? He is far more attack minded than Aleksandar Kolarov therefore he will be the same defensively as Kolarov a suspect! If we didn't have to rely on defending due to Mancini's formation and tactical positioning then Coentrao maybe a success, even Kolarov could be a success but at the moment we're a team who set set out defensively VS a lot of teams so there is no-way I would want Coentrao at City unless we suddenly changed our game plan and attacked the entire game.
Kolarov doesn't seem to possess the pace and skills that Coentrao seems to have but I don't think Coentrao could do any better defensively when we're having our off days and having to defend deep. I would much prefer Leighton Baines but he will be mega expensive due to Moyes and Everton's valuation + the Lescott saga.

If we wanted Coentrao why didn't we buy him at the end of last season? He had an impressive World-Cup in an attacking Portugal team so we could have bought him then, he may have been an expensive purchase due to his performance on the World-Stage but he surely would have cost the same amount as Kolarov did and nothing more.

Quite simple really, we weren't playing CL. Defensively he has been fantastic this season. If you don't believe me watch the semis of the Europa league. Why do you think Munich, Real, Utd and Barca are all interested in him

The first misconception is that Kolarov is suspect defensively. He isn't. He is tough defensively, and yes he has had off days when he was run ragged. But all in all he is a solid defensive player.

It is offensively that Kolarov is poor. 1) He is not very fast, so he can't beat his man as easily 2) He is not very comfortable on the ball. 3) He makes the most poor decisions of most fullbacks I have ever seen. All these make him a terrible attacking fullback. Which is why Coentrao's name comes up a lot. Coentrao is good in these areas.

I don't know wht people always say this. Even when we are set up defensively (which frankly has been 5 times this year- Home and Away (Chelsea, & Man United) and Away Arsenal. In every other game, we were pushed back as opposed to set up defensively. But even that notwitstanding. Even when set up defensively. The Wingbacks are still supposed to be the outlet for a counter attack. SO it really matters not how we set up. The wingbacks still play a similar role, which requires them to have offensive skills Kolarov presently does not possess.

Even Kolarov could be a success but at the moment we're a team who set set out defensively VS a lot of teams so there is no-way I would want Coentrao at City unless we suddenly changed our game plan and attacked the entire game.
Actually, that is the question! Based on his performance, we have seen very little that suggests he will improve on his decision making, and his cross accuracy rate. These are where he has shown serious deficiencies.

Now this is strange, as Baines is an even weaker defender than Coentrao or even Kolarov for that matter. So if we are stuck defending. He certainly isn't what we want. He is better when you have the ball like Coentrao, but at best is an average defender.

It was a mistake on Mancini's part in my opinion. I wanted Coentrao then (actually I wanted Luiz then) and was anti Kolarov because he seemed selfish to me. And I still am. Even though I think Kolarov is improving.

Coentrao is an absolutely brilliant player. So surprised that he hasn't been swooped up yet.

does anyone know if marcel jansen is still playing LB? Remember watching him a while back for hamburg and he looked very good
