Citizens

The Citizens is the club's nickname and always has been.

CityZens is a marketing abomination invented by simpletons.
Amazingly the Z spelling variety does have some legitimacy going back over 100 years. There were some cartoons created showing a city fan (in a top hat sometimes) being described as a “City-zen”. I think the club should re-introduce the hyphen!

I think we just didn’t get associated too much with a forced nickname because we were the only team to play in light blue shirts so that made a lot more sense to reference that. Coventry didn’t start playing in sky blue - in the pro leagues - until the sixties (although had worn it at earlier stages when still an amateur team).

At least we haven’t gone full marketing mode and incorporated a dodgy cartoon character conceived in the 60s into our club badge like some have. Now that would be embarrassing.

We've always been The Citizens. No doubt Gary James will cast some light on when the name first stuck, but it definitely precedes my 1st City supporting days in the 60's.
As if by magic…. It goes back to 1894. Though it’s not a name us fans seem to have picked.

Oh and that link includes the drawing @Citizen of Legoland mentioned. Cityzen spelling was possibly the preferred spelling in 1890s too.

I grew up in Manchester and always heard us referred to as “the blues” or “City” .In 1984 I moved down South and returned North again in 2019. Since returning I find that we have become the “citizens”. When did this happen?
It's nothing new.

We've been the Citizens for as long as I can remember. The marketing team have just run with it.
