City’s New Kits

There’s no record of St Marks having a badge. The cross was Gorton AFC’s.

But it’s not a Maltese Cross, it’s a Cross Pattée.
We're not descended from any Gorton AFC, who are you referring to?

We are descended from Saint Mark's (West Gorton) FC, who wore the aforementioned crest emblasened on their kits

Can anybody answer this. Just a random kit question. What shirt did city wear away to sheffield wednesday on jan 1st 1990? Was the the maroon/white candy stripe or was it the all maroon shirt
All Maroon. I remember because of David Fucking Hurst.

We aren’t descended from anyone. Manchester City Football Club were a new club formed on 16th April 1894. Despite some people being involved in St Marks, Gorton and Ardwick, in the formation of City, City do not have a forerunner. Ardwick were still a club after that City formation date and even played two games after we’d formed.

The timeline goes:

St Marks … founding date unknown-1884
Gorton … 1884-1887
Ardwick … 1887-1894
…that line ended when Ardwick folded

St Mark’s are said to have worn black and red halves (but there has never been a team photo of St Marks found and I think there’s only one mention of their kit anywhere and no other mentions of their kit colours), there is no record of a badge for that club.

This is Gorton AFC (not St Marks):

And Ardwick AFC:

‘On 18th April 1894 Ardwick lost 2-0 to Sheffield United at Hyde Road before a poor attendance of 200 spectators in a match held “to help the Ardwick Committee meet some of their heavy financial liabilities.” Ardwick’s last match was a scoreless draw away against Stockport County on 28th April 1894’.

Basically yes. I’d quibble about some minor details (for example should we regard MCFC’s formation date as 12 April 1894 when the meeting was held and documentation signed or 16 April when Companies House approved/recorded it) and would always argue that without Ardwick and the earlier clubs there’d be no MCFC. BUT MCFC was definitely a new club.

People rightly get upset that MUFC record their formation as 1878 even though MUFC wasn’t founded until 1902 and they believe City should follow suit but that would be wrong. Utd are the club who should change their date not City.

City do, rightly, refer to St Mark’s, Gorton & Ardwick etc with the cross pattee featuring around the stadium and in light shows etc. but MCFC is not the same club or company as Ardwick, Gorton or St Mark’s. Those clubs are important in our story and some individuals were involved from 1880s through to 1940s in the various predecessors and MCFC.

I‘ve written a lot on this over the years and posted stuff on my website:
