City and bringing on players from lower divisions

Joe Mercer signed Tony Coleman from Doncaster on transfer deadline day in 1967, and at the time most fans hadn't heard of him, but he played a big part in the championship winning team of 1 67/68.
But the game has changed a lot over the years, and not all for the better, with all these foreign owners and foreign coaches.

The likes of Mick McCarthy , from Barnsley , did a good enough job for us , but i wouldn't call him top class ..... Shaun Goater too , proved a bargain buy ..... and i did like Kevin Horlock too

but obviously , prior to the late seventies , the Likes of Bell , Lee and Summerbee had been unbelievably good purchases for this club.

They were the same division as us bar Goater whose side were being promoted to the division we were being relegated from.

Hart and Weaver were good lower division buys, but now we get them at an earlier age e.g. Micah Richards from Oldham and Sturridge from Coventry.

Last top 5/6 team to buy a player from a lower league club and him be a roaring success??

Spurs (Gareth Bale) springs immediately to mind.

Gooners aint done too shabby with Walcott and Ramsey either................................
