City are in trouble, according to this fountain of knowledge..

Another bitter Goon , he's paying £2k a year for his season ticket and he now won't be witnessing Champions League football , Goons, Rags , Dippers pundits and fans all having a pop at our club at every opportunity perhaps they are now realising that our "oil money" is'nt gong away and we are going to be a thorn in their proverbial backside for years to come. If we did by some miracle win the quadruple next season , Pep would not get manager of the year and none of our players would make the team of the season , but the hate would crank up a few notches , bring it on.

I often look at the bribes scandal back in 1905 and can't help thinking that while City weren't innocent, the punishment we suffered collectively as a club was probably the harshest in the history of English football and could've conceivably put us out of business. Then I look at all the other dodgy shit going on in the same era and see clubs getting off pretty much scot free for what were arguably more severe offences.

You're right. The accepted version of events is that City weren't blameless by any means but these illegal payments to players were being made by plenty of other clubs who went unpunished. City were a rising power at the time and won the FA Cup and very nearly the double in 1904. The FA's darlings at the time were Villa and they didn't want some upstart club from the north getting above themselves so they hung City out to dry. The upshot was that City had to dismantle their team and, not for the first or last time, City made a great gesture of neighbourliness to United by letting them have several top players including Billy Meredith. That set the rags up for their first two titles and an FA Cup before WW1 while City faded for years.
