Hi all, before anyone starts Im not posting this on the main site because my dad reads it so don't want him to clock.

It's fathers day on Sunday and I have just got back from the magnificent Waterstones store on Deansgate. I was just wondering which city book is best for my dad as he is going on holiday in July and thats about the only time he reads.

1) The Mike Summerbee Autobiography

OR

2) The Worst of Freinds by Shindler (about Mercer/Allison era)

Goaters book is a great read and it send shivers down the spine reading some of the stories in it as well as making you shake your head in dis-belief at others (Keegan)

Read that last summmer mate, before passing it onto my dad!

I haven't read Shindler's but Summerbee's is a good read.

I'm only young so I never saw the teams of the 60s and early 70s but I enjoyed it so I'm sure your dad will appreciate reading about those times again. It isn't a groundbreaking book or anything like that but it's decent enough. I read it in less than a week so it can't have been bad.

I'd recommend Mike Doyle's book 'Blue Blood' and of course Fred Eyre's book 'Kicked Into Touch (plus extra time)' if your dad hasn't read them. I think they were both more interesting accounts.

My dad went home and away in the 60/70's and was there at St James park in 68, he has not read Mike Doyles but he was a big hero of his as well, would you recommend that ahead of Summerbees book?

I found Doyle's more interesting, it's a bit more edgey. Summerbee's was okay but a bit safe.

I bought Doyle's in Bury at the 'Book Clearance Centre' only cost about £3. I don't know if they'll still have copies in stock.

Get him both, tightarse!

Not much to choose between them, I 've read them both.

It's not perfect but I'd go for Schindler's.

Mike Doyle's book is available on Amazon reduced here
<a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blue-Blood-Mike-Doyle-Story/dp/1904438385/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1245172728&sr=1-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blue-Blood-Mike ... 728&sr=1-1</a>

of course his original autobiography is as rare as hens' teeth now and long out of print.

I'd get him this and Buzzer's book and

and

he is your dad after all!

Just finished reading Worst of Friends and whilst I thought Schindler was a knob a few months back on 5 Live talking about the takeover, there is no doubt he can write a book because I thought it was excellent. He won't be able to put it down once he starts reading it.

Mercer and Allison was just before my time (born in 1971) but I could still relate to the book based on what I know so your dad (who I assume was around at the time) will love it.

And if he doesn't shed a tear at the end at the way the relationship ended (or at least the way Schindler imagines it ended) he has a heart of stone.

Go for "Worst of Friends". Well written and raises emotion.

Summerbee - as someone else mentions, is a safe "things were better in my day" borefest. No disrespect to Buzzer, but it was poor.

Doyle - I'm Man City's George Best, me! No you're not, Mike.
