City fan hurt at Schalke - now in UK - msg on P39 (Donation link on P 36)

No you pay there is no free hospital care in Europe it's a myth. With that health card thing you pay what the locals pay I think but I can assure you it isn't free. Both clubs are picking up the hospital and hotel bills.....as I said, but any money raised will hopefully pay his bills at home until he gets on his feet

From the EHIC website - it will change after 29th March

Currently, your EHIC enables you to access the necessary state-provided healthcare in Germany at a reduced cost, or sometimes for free, if you are staying there temporarily. If you are asked to pay for health services upfront, it is likely that you are not being treated under the state system.

EHIC does not cover certain costs, including:

  • private treatment
  • being brought back to the UK
  • mountain rescue services
  • cruises
It's important that you ensure you're treated by a healthcare provider in the state system as you won't be covered for private healthcare.

Be careful if healthcare arrangements are made by a hotel or travel representative. They might reassure visitors that they can claim back whatever is paid out, but they are referring to private insurance and not the treatment given under the EHIC.

Any costs incurred for private healthcare are non-refundable.

Why are there hospital bills? I thought it was free health care throughout Europe for British citizens (whilst still in the EU) - the government (NHS) will be picking up the tab.
Might aply for a spraind ankle but not something this specialized plus .money raiswd will help morgage and any after care payments .

Thanks - I have absolutely no issue with the money being raised, was just questioning why there would be a medical bill as I thought it would be covered via the NHS, leaving more money for things you have mentioned :)

Plus: Blues, I do not know the family but I do have an idea how serious this injury is. The lad will not be back at work on Monday, he wont be back in a few weeks, he is in a foreign hospital which means visits from friends is out, he only has his family to help him through this and they will be suffering as well. They will all be suffering financially and emotionally so if you can help in any small way please do.

I would also like to thank all the Shalke fans for their donations and good wishes. True football fans.

I'm sorry Ive not read the whole thread but instead of just collecting at Mary Ds why don't you ask the club if you can leave a bucket at each gate on Saturday - I'm sure there are a number of fans that will throw a few bob in & contribute. Good luck & Get Well Soon young man.

It needs volunteers mate .If people were willing to help we could do a bucket collection at the ground and in the pubs. Most people on here havent donated so cant see them helping with a collection .not a criticism just a fact. Each to there own .I dont donate to every appeal either.Just gratefull to everyone that has been able to help. Most important though is the well being of the lad and his family.

I've no issue with it either and have donated but just on this point about medical costs, surely any costs incurred can be claimed back through travel insurance? My boss's wife got pneumonia when they were over in Hong Kong several years ago and the hospital bills came to about £15,000. They had to shell out at the time but claimed the whole lot back later through their travel insurance provider

The money raised will probably help pay his morgage and help the family with travle cost expenses ect.If any one wants to organise a bucket collection at the ground please feel free to do so
