City Football Group (CFG) (parent of MCFC) issued £210m of new A preference shares on 30 June 2024

Fucking hell, talk about ungrateful.
Why is it ungrateful to want money spent in Manchester instead of Salou, Catania, Tokyo or wherever these clubs are from?

Why should I be grateful that this CFG thing has brought football clubs from Sydney, Philadelphia, Salto or wherever they’re from into an entity that doesn’t mean or do anything for Manchester City or the people of Manchester?

Can you name a single thing that having a football club in Mumbai has done for me or you or Manchester City? And what we’ll miss without them now they’re leaving?

Whether a dozen clubs were brought on board in the next year or every single club left the CFG tomorrow, nothing would be different for Manchester City or Mancunians… or maybe City would be better off as the board members who sit on the CFG and oversee their role with Manchester City on the side, would mean they’d put all their efforts into Manchester City.

City spend no money in Manchester, is that what your telling me?

Not everything has to be for me, but City investing in those clubs has given all those fans success and memories they hadn’t had before.

It isn’t City’s money is it It’s CFG owners money. So nothing to do with you how they spend it.

I wish we could part ways with this CFG thing.

I agreed and sympathised with NAC Breda fans when they told CFG to sling it when they tried to get NAC to join a few years ago:

I’d rather see money go into other things in Manchester for the Mancunian population: other sports, a rugby league club (doesn’t have to be under the ‘Manchester City’ name, would actually be a bad idea to really, make it more of a wider ‘Manchester’ club), I’d rather see investment in Manchester Originals cricket, in local athletics clubs, in local gyms and leisure centres to get more people more active and healthy, other business ventures not necessarily in sport… than in worldwide football clubs that do nothing for Manchester City or the Mancunian population.

I have no absolutely affinity for any other club in the CFG. Couldn’t even name them all. The news above^ is the first time I’ve thought about Mumbai City FC since the news first broke about them joining the CFG. Don’t know anything about them, how they’ve done in the time they’ve been with the CFG, nowt… with there being fewer than a dozen posts about them in their own thread in over two and a half years on this site, that would suggest most of our fanbase don’t have a scoobies or a care about them and will be wholly unaffected by this news that the CFG are parting ways with them.
Agree on the Rugby team, and since the RLFC headquarters are at the Etihad I’m surprised it hasn’t happened. Manchester Rangers RLFC should be given a fresh start and financially backed.

Like they haven't spent millions on the city itself outside of football.
Pathetic.

You can't isolate MCFC from CFG. Without CFG, MCFC may not have appealed to the same extent and might never have been seen as a viable investment in the first place.

That isnt to say that CFG isnt a continuously evolving entity... it is. There may be parts of the group that arent working out as well as expected and other parts that are that are still part of a longer term plan - so change is a natural part of business.

Having a presence in the USA (or otger region) has a knock-on effect of increasing MCFC's brand recognition too. To what extent is something CFG will try to measure and take a calculated view on. Similarly the success of MCFC will have some bearing on the recognition of other CFG enterprises.

Let's not forget the potential for improved scouting networks and benefits of shared services. These can be difficult to measure but it doesnt mean they dont exist.

Arguing that CFG should just focus on MCFC is akin to arguing that we dont need a youth team as we might as well save our money and resources and just have a better first team. In fact, why stop there? Let's just focus on our goalscorers and stop wasting money on defenders who have far less tangible benefits to our performance.

Finally, let us not forget the constantly changing FFP / PSR rules that also forced us to be innovative and creative in our operations - which included the multi-club model. Having a parent company allows for flexibility when operating. We can theoretically benefit from conducting business in the most tax beneficial region or cross selling services between companies.

However you look at it, CFG isnt something you can simply isolate from MCFC. The two go hand in hand (for better or for worse). It's naive to think everything MCFC is the entire sum of our investors' vision.

Actually, as time passes City become a less important part of CFG. The amount of investment elsewhere begins to dwarf that in City and the local brands rely less on Mcfc. I would bet that Soriano has spent much more time on NYCFC than on Mcfc in the last twelve months or so.

If I can sponsor a football club that allows me to access markets across the globe, I am much more likely to do so than if that club only offers me a localised fan-base of working-class Mancunians.
I do not have any doubt that the international presence of the CFG has given a boost to Manchester City even if we discount the benefit of local scouting, training and player exchange providing a pathway for young talent, and we only focus on international sponsorship deals looking for a presence in global markets.

I think our owners vision is a lot bigger than ours as fans at times - probably why they can't be arsed locking horns with the British media in the way we would wish also. There are of course downsides, but ultimately you can't build a global brand on the back of 40000 Maine rd faithful etc.

Decent post apart from this part mate

It’s Sorriano’s brain child, so in 2008, the investment opportunity was MCFC & nothing at all to do with CFG

Soriano took the business model to the Barca board and they rejected it.
CFG have a global strategy that most don't even think about. Why would we open a Academy in Albania that isn't attached to a club. It's not just about money, it's about power and influence and not just for the CFG.
We don't need to appreciate or understand the relationships, we just need to support our club.

Good post. The CFG is also great for sponsors who can advertise all over the World in one go. It’s also very insular to think we can learn nothing from the other clubs.

  • Dominance of Manchester City: Manchester City generated £715 million of the group's total £933.1 million revenue in 2023-24, highlighting its central role in the group's finances.
  • Other Club Contributions: Other clubs like Girona and New York City FC contributed significantly less, with revenues around £60 million and £46.5 million respectively in the same period.
  • Overall Losses: Despite record revenues, CFG as a whole has consistently posted annual losses, with accumulated losses of £972.8 million since its founding in 2013. In the 2023-24 season, CFG reported a pre-tax loss of £122.2 million.
  • Growth: The group's revenue has shown significant year-over-year growth, rising from £705.1 million in 2021-22 to over £930 million in 2023-24.

That’s City. Not the CFG. I never said City don’t spend money in Manchester. I said that all this time effort and money that’s gone into this global ‘network’ (there’s no real network between them other than the branding though) of clubs would have been better if it had gone into Manchester City and Manchester.

I’d much rather a City branded group be a local multisport organisation, rather than a worldwide football organisation taken to places and people nobody in Manchester give one shiny shit about.

Barcelona booted Soriano out of their club when he brought this idea forward for them. So he brought it to us.

I wouldn’t mind if the CFG sold all its clubs tomorrow and dissolved as a group. I wouldn’t mind if FIFA banned multi club ownership and we had to do that. It would make no odds to Manchester City, it might even be a positive for us as, like I said, all those on both the board of the CFG and City would only have City to focus on.

Wonder what it is for 24/25
