Silver Lake is the global leader in technology investing, with over $43 billion in "combined assets under management and committed capital and a team of approximately 100 investment and operating professionals" located around the world.
Sorry they are a charity / sporting organisation !

No, they are a private equity firm.

The lines can get blurred but fundamentally venture capitalists are not the same as private equity.

They are venture capitalists rather than long term investors in Man City. Their aim is to make money for their shareholders. Clearly City's board think it benefits CFG too because they have need for capital.

What this tells you is that City, despite what our media critics say, are not able to tap Abu Dhabi. If we could, Sheikh Mansour would not dilute his equity in Man City.

Agree one of the few sensible comments re this news ... They have been brilliant owners and because of that you wouldn't want that ownership diluted anymore

It's not about the cash. Khaldoon is the CEO of an investment company 3x bigger than Silver Lake. If he needed to raise capital he could have them invest in us and it'd all stay under the Abu Dhabi umbrella.

Silver Lake have a major stake in -

Endeavour, the biggest talent agency in the world. They do the streaming for UFC, NFL and the NBA. They market the distribution rights for MLS, NFL, the Olympics, NHL etc. They produce the official Premier League video content. That's alongside their main business of marketing and promoting Athletes/Musicians/Actors.

Oak View Group, who can realise the potential of the Collar site with an Arena and all the transport/leisure money that will come with it and who knows what they can do elsewhere.

Madison Square Garden Co - Owners of the Knicks and Rangers, which means we're now in bed with 3 of the 4 major NY sports teams, probably something quite useful if you're trying to get permission to build a stadium in NY.

And that's just 3 three major Silver Lake investments where there's obvious avenues to grow and expand CFG beyond just contributing $500m.

According to the FT, Ari Emanuel, the Endeavour CEO is the guy who introduced Khaldoon and Silver Lake, and was at the Chelsea game, and in the CFG offices when the deal was signed. His desire to expand into football is apparently well known. So you can guarantee Endeavour are going to be involved in things going forward.

I think very shortly you`ll need a bigger spade.

Agree there are differences ... their goals are largely the same (maximise profits) the main difference is their ownership structure. Plus in this instance at least for now Silver Lake is acting more like a venture capitalist "Private equity firms mostly buy 100% ownership of the companies in which they invest. As a result, the companies are in total control of the firm after the buyout. Venture capital firms invest in 50% or less of the equity of the companies. ... " A

That's an interesting comment but I think you may be overstating it. Khaldoon can not just manipulate investments. That would be cronyism.

Silver lake by their very nature will have investments in technology and sports companies, but that doesn't give them expertise in those areas. It implies they understand those businesses. As you say though they have influence and the ear of the companies they invest in, and they maybe able to open doors, but if City have unlimited access to Abu Dhabi funds then building stadia is not a problem, money buys contracts and influence. If you want to technologically improve your content you pay for it to be done.

This deal is what it is, a commercial tie-up because City are not Abu Dhabi. If we were, we wouldn't have to play the political game. Abu Dhabi money would open doors. I think you are right to emphasise the connections and the politics behind business. City wont just have taken anyone's cash. CMC served a purpsose....access to Chinese clubs and markets. Silver lake gives us political and commercial allies in areas where we need them, but I don't think we do this if we have Abu Dhabi cash on tap.

Cronyism?! In the royal families of the Middle East?! Say it aint so.

Next you'll be telling me Mansour isn't actually qualified to be Deputy Prime minister of his country.
