Anyone else remember Ron Phoenix? Bright red hair - not like some of your blonds masquerading as gingers. Scored a goal on debut away at Arsenal, but broke a leg a bit later and never really recovered. He looked promising, but like Shawcross, Dyson, Pardoe, Bell et al his career was ruined by injury.
He was a proper red top. It was in 1952, though.

He had an ironmongers shop in Urmston in the 60s and 70s. I only knew he'd been a City player because my dad told me. His shop had great window displays. One side was for tools, ropes, penknifes etc, the other for ornaments, fancy lightshades and other stuff aimed at women.

I delivered his papers to a nice house nearby in the early 70s so he was doing OK.

I've just remembered that Phoenix also used to run football training sessions for boys on a nearby field.
