City or Rag pubs in Manchester

I always assumed The Old Monkey was Blue but that was a very long time ago.

Sounds like the NQ is the area to go to now.

Lots of very Blue pubs near or in the NQ. Gullivers, the Castle, Turks Head, Hare and Hounds, Abel Heywood, Crown and Anchor, Crown and Kettle, Port Street Beerhouse. Certainly on match days.The Wheatsheaf is a bit Raggy.

The Hare & Hounds in Shudehill is a great Blue pub. Full of Blues before and after. Nice pint of Joey's even though it ain't a Holts pub.

I posted about this incident on here before, but years ago me and my mate went for a pint in Mother Mac's after the match. We'd had about 2 pints all day and weren't remotely pissed, and we're both what you'd describe as normal, polite, well mannered people. Not pissed up footy louts etc.

Some old twat who I presume was the landlord / member of staff physically shoved us out of the doorway when we were walking in and slammed the door in our faces. I presume because we were both wearing City scarfs.

I never even tried to go in after that - wouldn't give them the steam off my piss and I was delighted when they went under. Could knock that shit tip down and open a Tesco for all I care.

I wish the new owners well with their music venue theme.

Fuck Mother Mac's and that mad old **** who worked there that day.

Not sure when you're talking about but Les was the landlord there for many years. Was a lovely bloke and also a blue. May have been having a bad day but it certainly doesn't sound like him.

Was round the NQ the other night and there seems to be loads of new bars, just since the end of last season. Always good fun trying new places. The Freemount seems to have moved across the road to the other side of Oldham Street, unless I was a bit pissed by then and imagined it.

I cannot believe that anyone would want a return to drinking at the Claremont, Parkside, similar or old Rusholme pubs. Even Mary D's is an upgrade.

Maybe coming to the derby with the missus recommendation for a good pub in the town/northern quarter Was thinking Mary d’s but she may be scarred after going in there!

Random question years ago I went to a sports bar felt like it was in ancoats but cannot remember the name for the life of me does anyone know if it’s still there. Down a side street pizza place in the corner, clock tower type building opposite ? Winding me up trying to think of it lol

Yep, that sounds like the place that's near me in Ancoats, Cutting Room Square, or it WAS near me .... it's gone now, the 'Second City' sports bar shut down a couple of years ago, they were in a bit of debt ...it's an American pie restaurant now ..... the trouble is, on derby day, you are gonna get a few rags in most places .... the Salmon Of Knowledge, an irish pub on Lever St, nr Stevenson square is a decent enough place, i watch footie in there all the time .... but there's probably gonna be a few rags in there too.

Not sure when you're talking about but Les was the landlord there for many years. Was a lovely bloke and also a blue. May have been having a bad day but it certainly doesn't sound like him.

No idea who he is or if the guy who acted like that was him.

Whoever the member of staff was on that day a total **** and highly unprofessional.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I'll have to check it out. It had its soul ripped out many, many years ago but good to see Dry Bar still operating as a bar at least. Guessing the plans to open a hotel there have been scrapped..

George was a legend. After the Circus he had the Abercrombie which was a rag pub. Anyway I went in with a group of City pals one afternoon and he gave us all a free drink because he remembered me from the Conti Club days!

He is a lovely guy. He took us to the Corfu restaurant next to the Conti one evening real Greek food and great people.
I say is, hopefully not was ... ?

Seven Brothers always seems pro blue to me

The Seven Brothers themselves are all rags. The pub on a Cutting Room Square is packed with blues on home match days though.

The Castle is still a great pub with the best juke box in Manchester. A mix of boho music fans and old gits like me who have used it since the 70s. Full of Blues pre and post match. They don’t like colours though like many places. The nearby Crown and Kettle is also great with great beer.
